They could have tested at VH without AA. That would show pure horsepower difference without the framebuffer limiting the 9800GX2... Or if they're currently tresting, not post anything until they have tests that people actually care about...

Ideally, using higher settings should only widen the gap between the newer cards and the older ones. The only difference between testing medium and very high is the total frames per second takes a big nose dive. (Unless it's being cpu limited)

I think what they have is definitely enough to get an idea of what the card is capable of, even if it isn't the exact test you were looking for. I can't wait until the reviews come out to see how it stacks up to 8800GTX SLI.

Overall...if this is really a driver issue then i hope it is..because i rather buy a 9800GX2 instead since price on that is falling fast.

Preliminary conclusion

Apparently preliminary testing did not show any jaw-dropping results. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 can be considered as somewhat of a 're-work' of the GeForce 9800 GX2 into a single core package with faster processing capability and more bandwidth.

There is not much performance boost for older games, but for DirectX 10 games like World in Conflict, there is a more noticable improvement over the GeForce 9800 GX2. Not only DirectX 10 titles get a boost when you pick the GeForce GTX 280 over the GeForce 9800 GX2, using the former is more advantageous when you move up to a very high resolution of 2560 x 1600, a resolution found on 30-inch LCDs.

A point to note is abnormal performance in Crysis. We've tried re-benching the GeForce GTX 280 a few times but were greeted with the same results. However during benching, we did notice periodic stutters which were not present while benching the older GeForce 9800 GX2 cards. We are looking into this issue.

We are in the midst of testing Crysis on High settings (and with AA), as well as AA/AF on the other games. Stay tuned, as we work hard to bring you more results from the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 1GB.

Well, just let's wait one more day and then jump to conclusions.

LOL. A single chip (@ stock speed) faster than a GX2 OC, and twice as fast as a 8800GTX/9800GTX not jaw dropping because 1 game has issues? Riiiiiiight...

I don't think the card is interesting for many people because we've seen very similar performance in the 9800 GX2. It doesn't matter whether it's an achievment to put all of that power into a single GPU, the fact is that it's not going to be a groundbreaking experience, regardless of how it was implemented.

The performance advantage for GTX 280 vs 9800GX2 is going to grow larger and larger with each new DX10 game that comes to market. There may not be huge differences with older games, but the GTX 280 is definitely much more future-proof and capable of playing current and future games at higher resolutions with higher levels of AA without suffering from huge fluctuations in the frame rate.

The 9800 GX2 is still a great card, but it was really a stop gap until the D10U GPU was ready for market.

Agreed, GTX280 is defiantly more future proof...but they really could have made it using the new ram on it....i guess they learned from the 8800GTX card -.-...

Just seems like there's an overwhelming amount of "meh" feeling for this card. Personally, I agree that single GPUs are better, no micro stuttering, multi monitor support. I was simply stating why I think alot of people don't seem too excited.
