Default Reproducible X Crash/lockup

OK, when i run compiz and open a lot of windows (enough that it would have triggered the black window bug in compiz) then i try to watch something with mythtv X just goes black (well i can see the gnome-panel, thats it). And when i check the logs i see that nvidia is having problems, looking at top i see that mythtv is at 100% CPU, and that trying to kill X makes gdm go to 100% CPU and mythtv go defunct and to 100% CPU

this is what seems to be popping up in the Xorg.0.log

Code:
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (0, 6, 0x8000, 0x00000028, 0x00000028)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (0, 6, 0x8000, 0x000000b8, 0x000000b8)
Are there any workarounds i can try?

Have you verified that you're using the latest motherboard BIOS?
Does this problem persist if you set NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf ?

Well i get the same problem if i use the NvAGP 0 option, as for the BIOS, well i have v1023, the latest is 1024.001 (so i have the next version down), plus this is an old motherboard and i haven't had any problems with it (and the latest BIOS is 2 years old) so i doubt the BIOS could cause this

Please update to the latest BIOS, and retest.

Default Re: Reproducible X Crash/lockup

ok, i upgraded the BIOS and i'm now at the latest version

first time i tried doing this mythtv was black and random windows went black or got corrupted (much worse the the first one i think), but nothing but this at the end of the Xorg.0.log

Code:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Initialized GART.
(II) NVIDIA(0): Initialized GART.
(II) NVIDIA(0): Initialized GART.
(II) NVIDIA(0): Initialized GART.
(II) NVIDIA(0): Initialized GART.
Then i restarted X, and mythtv was green pinstripes and a lot of other stuff was corrupted

so then i did a cold reboot and the same thing, a whole bunch of stuff gets corrupted and mythtv does not work

turning indirect rendering back on in compiz makes the system much much more responsive when i have a bunch of windows open and fixes everything, at the expense that the mouse jumps when i build stuff (its always did that when i used indirect rendering)

Default Re: Reproducible X Crash/lockup

Hi,

Same problem, and none of the work-arounds related to GART or ACPI ..or even IRQ issues help. At my gdm login four screens are live, if when I login to the wm i am quick enough, I can 'tail -f /var/log/Xorg.0.log' and watch as..

(II) NVIDIA(0): Initialized GART. <- this is when my first monitor goes blank
(II) NVIDIA(0): Initialized GART.
(II) NVIDIA(1): Initialized GART. <- this is when my second monitor goes blank

We have the same problem, using a different bus (PCI vs AGP), I thought it might be useful to point out that as I have two monitors running from each of the two NV17GL heads, only two of my four monitors are blank.. ..so are you sure that your X is dead / locked?? ..or is that you just cannot see anything??

As I moaned openly on the irc channel, I would happily bin this rather expensive quad-head card if it could be proved that PNY (the pcb vendor) have just done an atrocious job of putting this card together, testing it on linux etc. ..but my problem is that this issue is only killing me in this rig, it previously worked flawlessly on another for a couple of years, without any of the 'try turning off any setting that might remotely stress the gpu' fudges.

..some offensive log messages..

In vein i have tried a kernel built disabling agp support, and have tried the nvAGP setting 0,1,2. The only question I can think to ask is 'why is GART initializing at all'? ..i thought it only applied / was used for AGP interfaces.. ..hence this definition

GART Graphics Aperture Re-map Table. GART is a table in
memory containing the page re-map information used
during AGP aperture address translations."

..i'm probably wrong here though.

I have the KT400 chipset and there's a note in the README about an old Asus board's AGP settings being screwy with some BIOS versions. My BIOS is the latest, but it's years old and ABit are pretty quick to deprecate models.

Can anybody help us?

So I try and compromise and say, 'I can survive with just enabling two screens instead'.. ..'take twinview out of the picture'..

I seem to have a less stable system now. Here's my some more log entries over the last few minutes.. ..remember this is with NvAGP=0.. ..noapic acpi=off no dpms interfering ..and on a board that works well in another two rigs..
