Default Vista - dvd rom issue

I have a weird issue

If i turn off autorun, both my cd players, one is a cd burner, the other is a dvd burner, will not recognize any dvd or cd I put in. Anytime I try to access by going into my computer and hitting explore, it comes up with a message that it thinks it is a blank cd and wants to format to prepare to burn it.

But if i turn autorun back on, it works perfectly fine.

The reason I turn autorun off, is there is a strange problem where if autorun is on, the Hard drive light constantly blinks even though there is no activity and drives me crazy.

Is there a way i can have autorun off, and still be able to use the cdrom drive? I am not that familiar with vista

Thanks

In Control panel>Autoplay you can set up each drive to handle any kind of media according to your preferences. I haven't had any issues with it so far.

The one problem I did have was certain game dvds weren't recognized properly. If that's the case go into device manager> DVD/CD drives and get hte exact model number of the drive, then go to the manufacturer's website and search for firmware updates. This fixeed my problem on my Lite-on DVD burner.

It's nice when it's easy.
