I've been harrasing BFG some more, this is the reply I got today...

"I would be surprised if Nvidia actually lets us or you know about fixing the problem. It will more then likely just be part of a driver update."

Not so impressive, I don't doubt or hate the BFG man, honesty is key! - But nVidia are taking le piss, right now I've got my 2nd dud card, can't really use it in anything beyond 2d - and i'm down 450, I am in a situation and don't really know what to do.

You could ask them if they would test the card prior to shipping it to you. If you point out you'll be wanting a refund if you get another dud one I'm sure they'll oblige.

I got an asus 280gtx 2 days ago, it worked well on day one (played ~3 hours crysis, fear and et:qw without problems - didn't monitor the temperatures, the fan got pretty loud in crysis, though)
but yesterday after 1 hour of et:qw it suddenly gave me a black screen with red lines. After reboot I got the red lines and a bsod in windows (which vanishes too fast to read it), strangely a 2nd reboot removed the lines and all worked normal again. But after 5 minutes of playing it crashed again. All I can do since then is to boot until the desktop should be loaded and then, either a bluescreen is shown very shortly (can't read it) or it just hangs. Those red lines won't go away again. (I reinstalled/reconnected the card to no avail).

A picture I took during boot is attached.

Anybody seen such a behavior and can confirm the card is broken or any ideas what other factor could cause this problem, please?

I got a thermaltake 750W psu, asus p5k board and my 8800gtx works fine right now.
Interesting, if you switch off PC and leave it for like 15-30 minutes then run it again, does it still does these red lines?

No that doesn't help. After it happened yesterday and I couldn't boot anymore I reinstalled my 8800gtx to search the web for information.
I reinstalled the 280 today, after I came from work, and the lines were there instantly. So it can't be a heat problem.

Thx guys for the replies. I guess I will send it back tomorrow.

First eVGA 280 would get up to 105 degrees in Crysis within about 5 minutes, causing it to throttle and stutter like crazy. Just got the RMA replacement and it gets to about 87 with smooth performance all the way. Furmark pegs the new card in the 96-98 range after about 20 minutes with no throttling or artifacts. Next step is to work on case airflow. I'm probably going to add a couple fans to keep things moving, but the replacement card seems to be working as it should...for now.

I've received confirmation from NVIDIA that they are aware of the problem and it is being investigated. I brought this thread to their attention a couple of weeks ago.

I've purchased hardware that ended up being defective as well, but I can't imagine the frustration when the replacement unit is also defective. It's certainly a tough situation for the consumer to be in - especially when others are not experiencing the same problem.

Hey I just registered to say that I am having the Overheating issue too

I was so excited when I started up my PC. After playing Crysis for ~5 mins I noticed that the game was stuttering and that the fan on the card was pulsating.
I fired (no pun intended) up Hardware monitor and saw that the max temps were @ 106*C!
Got an RMA from newegg -- hope the next card is a good one. If not I WILL buy a 4870X2.

I'm using HWMonitor to measure temps with my three GTX 280's. I've oc'ed them to 660/1420/1150 and even after an hour of Crysis I'm only hitting about 85C on the hottest one.

I wonder if there is a sensor problem here.

Maybe, but cards shut down because they hit 120c "supposedly" within a couple of minutes...
