If AMD's HD 4870 can come to within 85-90% of the performance of the GTX 280, it may really force NVIDIA to drop the price on its flagship card. Who would buy a $649 card when they can get a card almost as good for less than half the price? NVIDIA has already announced a cheaper 9800 GTX and a $229 9800 GTX+ to compete with Radeon HD 4850. Let's hope the price comes down. I wouldn't mind a refund from Newegg!

Hard to believe the 4870 will be that close, if it is we should all buy amd this round so that the competition stays close... 4870 CF is looking good... maybe I will get that 24" monitor after all...

I'd like a link to those benchies please. The 280 at $600 FTL if the a single 4870 is really pulling off those scores.

Well I think an AMD slide might just possibly have a tiny chance of just being oh so ever slightly biased towards the ATI product.
![]() I'm not really expecting the 4870 to beat the GTX 260. But I hope it's not too far behind. Surely not going to put any heat on the GTX 280. No, that will be a job for the 4870 X2.

I've heard that the $299 version of the HD 4870 will only have 512MB of memory, even if it is GDDR5. If that's so, it won't be able to do as well in high resolutions with AA and AF. Sometimes biased reviews will cherry pick their benchmarks to make a card look better than it actually is. Also, benchmarks don't tell the whole story. I learned that when I got my GTX 280. If you've experienced this card, you'll know what I mean. It's all about gameplay!
