Default 790i, I'm done

I'm done with 790i. I've had Vista x64 corrupted twice on in me in the last few days.

At first all was fine. When my OS got corrupted the first time I dropped my memory down to 1333 and my CPU to 3.0Ghz. I kept the timings the same as when I was at 3.6/1600, or that is 9-8-8-24 2T.

I didn't change a thing and while I was playing AoC on the second fresh install my computer just shut off and restarted. No blue screen, no warning. I thought at first my PSU was too weak or was dying. So I dropped my CPU and GFX card down to stock, and kept my ram @ 1333 9-8-8-24 2T. After my system crashed/rebooted two more times in a row I tried Crysis, then Oblivion. Same thing.

I could surf fine and do other things yet couldn't game. When it first started happening I hadn't touched a thing in the BIOS.

After a lot of dinking around with no success I pulled the mobo. I decided to return to the most trouble free rock solid mobo I've used, the ancient i975x BX2.

I gamed for hours on AoC last night with my Q6600 @ 3.5 and my graphics card @ its full OC. No problems.

Maybe there is some trick I missed and I don't feel like risking my hard disks. I have them too long and like them too much.

I thought the last timing (24) had to be at least as much as the others added together? 8+8+9=25. Too low and it can cause data corruption.

I might be wrong but that's what someone here told me.

I just had the same happen to me on a 780i. Wouldn't boot, freezes, corrupt dvd burning, blue screens you name it. I'm not even going to rma it. I switched back to my badaxe2 and 8800gtx and no probs. I really think it has something to do with the sata ports/drivers. Had one sata port die for no reason. Also I think there are some serious heat issues with the mcp/northbridge, on boot it would regularly exceed 60 deg Celsius. I will never use an nforce chipset again...

Did you have the NB actively cooled?

I haven't heard that. My ram is actually rated 7-7-7-18. Most folks I know that run relaxed timings go 9-9-9-24-28. I figured CAS 9 Tras 24 @ 2T was not very demanding, particularly when I reduced the speed to 1333 from 1600. My NB was 39C and never above 41C @ any time.

Maybe I'll try it again in the future and it won't be soon.

Either I'm wrong, or it's different with DDR3 from DDR2.

If you're correct it means you can't run G Skill performance ram on 790i @ it's rated specs-

Here's an example of cheaper DDR3-

It's rated 9-9-9-24. I was essentially running my ram like that the second time, or DDR3 1333 Cas 9 Tras 24 2T.

I take it nVidia sorted the corruption problem the OC'd RAM? Didn't keep an eye on that thread.

Yes with a fan that was better than the one supplied.

3 of my current boards plus one that is temporary off duty after 4 years, and will return to duty in 2-3 weeks disagree with you.

I am not going to run down 790i. Maybe I will try it again in the future. Right now I am disappointed and am not in the mood to risks my hard disks. I didn't think 3.0GHz @ DDR3 1333 9/24 2T was asking too much.
