Default Re: GTX 280 screeching...

I would have thought it was the power supply, but after using the same one in a different system, it did not happen. I also underclocked my QX9650 to 2GHz, stock voltage, which is lower then Q6600 stock voltage. And what's wrong with my power supply? I was under the impression that Silverstone was a high quality brand, even k|ngp|n uses Silverstone PSUs for his benching. I'm not running SLI, and I have a fairly normal OC for my CPU, so I wouldn't need more then 850w would I? Downlclocking the card makes no difference either, and it's not the fan spinning up because I have it set on a fixed percentage. I'm thinking the same things you guys are, but nothing seems to fit the problem .

I had something like this with my 8800 Ultra...got really annoying. It got worse when I switched to a P5K Deluxe motherboard as I recall. I finally tracked the high pitched noise to the power supply. I replaced my PCP&C 750 watt with another, and same problem..then I switched to the 1kw enermax and end of problem.

I tried moving the card in the slot a little, didn't help. I think if that was the cause I would have discovered it by now with all the swapping I've done. I also put my TJ09 on its side to see if that would stop any vibration, didn't. With this PSU thing, it seems really hit and miss. I was considering getting a 1200w for SLI but not this soon.

Sometimes it can be a PSU, remember that the 280 pulls more wattage than any other card, so if you have another way to rule out the PSU that would make sense to try...

I have the Ultra 1600w and I'm getting the same screeching sound, I also remember it on the three PCP&C PSUs I have owned.

I guess its not pure wattage then, good to know I guess, but harder to fix Good news is the card is a beast, X5800 on Vantage w/ 177.26, I haven't reinstalled 177.41 yet. And it overclocks like a dream, 741/1458/2646 I'm probably gonna push back the mem clock, just seems way too high.

On my card (8800gt) as with others the squeal is heard if you have a very high frame rate.
Like in some games when intro movie is seen, the fps can be in the thousands.

So just enable Vsync to force 60fps and the noice should be gone. If it is in fact from the card that is and it's same issue as some g80 and up suffers from.

If what above is true for you, then you need not worry about it.

ya know, i think you may be right.

damnit, my system is too fast!

never thought i'd say that one.

luckily the beast is fast enough to enable vsync... i don't seem to need to squeeze every last frame out.

slightly OT, but any body else notice that triple buffering seems to be working in D3D now without the need for an additional hack?

working triple buffering + force vsync = fast and smooth.

Vsync did not work for me. I remember my GTX would create the same sort of noise, only not as loud, in 3Dmark03 when the FPS were high. This is constant, and even happens in Crysis when the FPS are in the 30's. The problem is how loud it is, like I said, I can hear it over all of my case fans at their highest settings and with my headset on in-game. I think this is the same problem thats being mentioned here, it's just much more pronounced, which is why I cant just ignore it like I would usually.
