Angry black console after X start

Hi all,

after X starts using the nvidia driver v173.14.09 the consoles (vty 1-6) turn black. I can still enter commands in them but no feedback is given (the screen is black).

I have a NV 8800M GTX card with 512 dedicated VRAM (on a Clevo M57RU laptop - as far as i know, it's the same card as in the Alienware m17x). Xorg version is 1.4.0.90 (openSuSe 11.0).

I have searched the net relentlessly without any success.

Anyone encountered this ?

Thanks,

edit: just that I am clear. Xorg works perfectly (3D enabled, etc). I can switch back to it (Alt-F7) but switching to Alt-F1...6 brings me to a black screen. Switching back to Alt-F7 brings me back to Xorg without any hassle. I have a feeling that this problem is framebuffer related but can't really be certain of that.

is there nobody that can set me in a direction that might resolve this issue ?

I found some similar posts on this forum as well as on others, but none seem to be able to solve this issue. I know that the problem also appears with 169.12 set of drivers. i haven't tried with older ones as they should not support the 8800m family of gpus (G92).

as far as i could figure, the problem might lie in one of two areas:
1. framebuffer issue (compatibility of the nvidia driver with the framebuffer actually)
2. it might display the output on the external monitor (which is not applicable for me since i have no external monitor connected). I know how to set the nvidia driver on which display to place the image in X but how could i achieve this for the vty's ? I have no external monitor so i find myself unable to test this theory.

Really NVIDIA, is it really so hard to hire some decent testers ??? Obviously, this is what the nvidia dev team seems to lack. A LOT !

I doubt nVidia is the case. I almost always use Fedora distro, framebuffer works like a charm with nVidia or not, however I tried Ubuntu 8.04 and anything that requires framebuffer (vga=775 for example) is absolutely blank.
OpenSuse uses framebuffer always, You might try vga=normal thing at the kernel parameters.

come on guys....nobody else experienced this ? really, nobody uses a 8800m gtx card with linux ? this issue is 100% of a bug in the nvidia driver as it is distro and kernel independent (appears also with ubuntu 8.04 and suse 10.3 (using 169.12) with different kernel releases). I will try the 169.07 version which "introduced" 8800m support. I hope that at least that one works (as it is the version that "introduced" 8800m support).

Really, nobody uses 8800m with linux, so that at least i find out that it SHOULD work ? At lease that i know my situation is solvable (otherwise, i will have to change back to ATI - their drivers may be buggy, but their bugs fit in a parking garage of a 2m maximum height - this one will only be fit on a plane runway)

Thumbs down Re: black console after X start

169.07 "adds" support for 8800M they say....nope!

after patching the initial package as in the sticky here (using patch for 169.12 though - but worked) so that it can be compiled under kernel 2.6.25 ... still same issue (console tty's turn black after x start)

sad, really sad

I have a similare problem using GeForce 7300GT (512Mb) on Asus AV8-MX mobo.

Installed the nvidia 173.14.09 driver with a Debian sid 2.6.25-10 kernel.
Starting X causes a brief flash of activity and the computer "locks"
leaving a non-blinking cursor in the top lefthand corner. The following
sequence enables a reboot
ALT+SYSRQ+R
" " +S
" " +E
" " +I
" " +U
" " +B

Unfortunately it was impossible to run the bug report with a running X as
starting X locked the machine and I do not have the facilities to telenet
into it.

I've also tried the following drivers with the 2.6.25 kernel
96.43.05
173.08
173.14.05
177.13
all of which failed in the above manner.

I enclose the result of nvidia-bug-report.sh. I note that the first part of
the report differs from a working installation of a 2.6.24 and 173.14.09
driver. As this has important hardware info I've also enclosed a copy of this
working bug report.

Guys,

two things:

1. X works perfectly in my case
2. the framebuffer is NOT the problem ! using vga=normal as well as recompiling the kernel WITHOUT framebuffer support changes nothing. Once X starts (and works as expected) turning back to the consoles brings a black screen (with lcd backlight on).

After all my tryings, i can only come to the conclusion that there is something really wrong with my case.

Initially i thought that it might display the image on the external monitor, but after enabling twinview, nothing happens.

As it might still be this, I am mentioning that the laptop has one DVI, the built-in screen (a 1920x1200 TFT), and a video-out. As DFP equals DVI and CRT equals 15 pin VGA connector (which my laptop does not have), i have a feeling that the console is outputed to the dvi port instead of to the built-in display. Unfortunately, i have no external monitor at the moment.

please freekin' TEST your realeases nvidia !!!

Doesn't look like a framebuffer issue to me but I tried vga=normal
on the off chance. Result-locked black screen with no cursor at all.
So little change there then.

The nvdiai installer is pretty good a clearing out the remains of the
previous driver before installing the new one, but I would suggest that
because different distros put stuff in different places some of the old
stuff remains and causes a conflict. Its the only thing I can think of which
explains why some cards work with one distro but not with another.

I have the same problem with all driver releases releases >=100.
With 96.xx works fine.

My card is a 6200 go turbocache.

Reported several times to nvidia but to no avail...

EDIT: Have you tried to connect an external monitor while you have the "black console" problem?

iro: No I haven't tried an external monitor. My box isn't a laptop and
anyway I haven't another monitor.

Anyway that aside I had a look through the bug reports for working and
non-working kernel/driver combinations. The most obvious differences is
the missing /proc entries in the 2.6.25 bug report. eg /proc/driver/nvidia/driver
and /proc/driver/nvidia/registry.
I can only presume this is because something crashed before these
processes started.

But the most obvious omissions are the lack of a nvidia interrupt in
/proc/interrupts and no nvidia module in /proc/modules.

This stuff is all beyond me so if anyone can point me in some direction
towards finding out why these /procs never get started they might help
to achieve a working 2.6.25 kernel/nvidia combination.

to fedora lovers:

1. maybe it is due to the fact that i always was a suse fan, but after seeing the new fedora 9 distro i can only say....my god, what a piece of ****.
2. bug is also present on this distro (i was hoping that it would work and i could find the difference somewhere in the kernel params or xorg or smth and change the suse distro accordingly, but...).

It is really really really sad that i have to turn back to the windows/vmware solution to have a functional linux!!!! laptop. With Ms turning over the binary office formats and (suse) linux getting a lot better at addressing usability without compromising the brain matter quality of the user (i'm talking about you, fedora 9) this could really have had a chance.

But...here comes nvidia with it's usual **** (and i don't mean "crap") of drivers (what was it, 30% of windows customer support issues where due to it's "drivers")

30% is always better than 100%, right ?

sad, really sad

p.s.: never was much of a nice guy :P
