Default Need your expert opinion on new machine

I bought a Dell XPS 630 about 3 weeks ago for $1400

It has the nforce 650 chipset, e8400, 4 gb ram, 8800 GT, 750 GB Sata, a really huge tower,

anyway I was doing some research and found out that mobo has a lots of problems, and also found out that the PCI slot really only has 8 lanes even though it was advertised as a PCI-E x16, I have 3 days to return the entire system, becuase I am kind of pisst off at Dell. There are problems with the lights and fans as well. Other then that the system does run great.

I am thinking I probably can build an entire system from scratch for cheaper.

What do you think?

I tried building my last system from scratch a few years back in 2003 and I really hated the case, it was so hard to work in, it was Antec sonata, a case I really want is one with a mobo tray, to make it really easy to install and upgrade, i suck at installing mobos, plus want to make sure I can keep the case cool..

I was looking at Lian-Li cases supposedly most of them have mobo trays I was looking at this one?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811112025

but that case came out in like 2002 think it will still work with the newer video cards? Also it only has 80mm fans

Also what do you recommend for Motherboard? I really do not know what to go with nowadays and power supply? I use to have an Asus for my P4 2.8.

I definitely want go Intel chipset, since i been hearing sli is not the way to go anymore.

Any advice? I am not a huge overclocker, I just want something stable and can play Age of Conan and other up and coming games.

Thanks

Ok setting up the RMA

thanks for the advice

any info on what I should be getting in terms of Case, mobo and PS

those are my 3 not sure what to get?

Is that case that I linked a good case? will it support the newer video cards that are really long ? I know it is a really old case from like 2002? I dont want to spend $300-400 that some lian cases are even though i know LIAN makes superb cases

or is there another one you recommend better? around similar price?

Wow, good call on sending that back so fast. That's at best an $800 computer (with a monitor).

I'd recommend these parts:

9800GTX for $197... get it fast before they raise the price back up to $350.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814500037

Gigabyte EP45-DS3L P45 chipset motherboard - $99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128345

E8400 CPU - $190
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037

WD 640Gb hard drive - $95 (these are the fastest drives on the market right now... don't go with any other size)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136218

EDIT: And RAM...

G.SKILL 4Gb (2x2Gb) PC-1066 - $90
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231166

That is a fantastic system for the money. With a good cooler it'll overclock like crazy (4Ghz+) and the graphics card should be great.

If you want a bit more graphics power, a 4870 might be a good choice for $100 more...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814103061

Though for that money, I really wish the card had more than 512Mb of memory.

Still, its hard to believe that the main components for a system THAT fast can be bought for $1000.

you missed the PSU, I would recommend something from Seasonic or Silverstone in 750-900W range.

I figured it depended on the case he chose. Some good cases come with PSUs.

I agree with your recommendation though.

OCZ is also good. My 700W GameXStream has been rock solid for around 2 years now. Runs very quiet and cool.

EDIT: This looks good for the price:

i really like Silverstone Olympia series, single rail monster, don't have to worry which cables are used for what, since there is only single rail.

never ever buy a PSU with 4 rails,
