Its certainly faster than a 8800GT, but a 9800GTX OC comes close to a HD4870 imho.

I do think the HD4870 is "a bit" overhyped. OK, it costs a lot less than a GTX280, but the gameplay on a 280 is a lot better than on a HD4870. Higher minimum framerates. Less drops. Better @ very high settings. 512MB vidmem is not cutting it no more.
I don't really know what to say here. I find it very playable, but I guess that for those who can afford an SLI setup with GTX280 its a bit more complicated. I can't blame you really, since you are already used to extreme high end setups (which I am not, and so cannot understand why 40-45 is bad), but you have to remember atleast one thing:

Most of us can't afford this, or find that its not worth it. To me, anything above 30fps is the best, so you can see my point. But as much as you are right that an SLI of GTX280 is better, the is not a single good reason to say that the 4800 series sucks.

Again, if you aim at hurting the fanboys, than I would say that it does suck, and a pitty it has only 512MB, and that the cooling sucks ass, and that the drivers sucks ass aswell (I actually thought about passing on ATI this time for their lack of descent drivers. However, I thought that since this time their cards are doing well that maybe they would buckerrrrup and make something good. Well, so far so good. I hope I wont be disappointed).

And damn! Do I go on and on and on! Gotta shut up some more and figure this thread is probably just for kicks...

Now you say something that hits the nail on the head!

I was used to GTX280 SLi. If you then go to HD4870CF, it is a world of difference. It is really a lot slower.

(I'm just counterflaming the ATi fan who posted som serious BS a few pages ago with my previous posts. I'll stop. That dude annoyed me) I dont really care anyway, but no one can say the HD4870 is as fast as the GTX280. It does't even come close. But, as you said, a GTX280 costs the double. (Its dropping quite fast now btw)

The HD4870 is a VERY good card for its money, and HD4870CF is quite fast too, but if you reallly want to FLY through games @ 1920x1200 4x or 8xAA and 16xAF with V-Sync ON, GTX280 (SLi) is the way to go imho. 2 HD4870's just dont make that happen. Maybe the 1GB version will be a little better @ that setting.

Once a man gets used to something (very high framerates), everything thats slower than that is a bummer. I really thought the HD4870CF setup would be as fast in COD4 and GRID as my GTX280 SLi setup, because in some reviews it is. But in raeal life its not.

So; bummer for me. An expensive one. But hey; i tried.

I'll never do that again too.

Since when was the 4870 supposed to compete with the 280 anyways?

Coming from a 8800-320 to my 4850, I'm completely satisfied. I will be even more so when they have proper drivers released for the 4800s.

Well, I do not really believe the GTX260 is a lot slower than a HD4870. If the 260 is 20% slower than a 280, I think the GTX260 and HD4870 are equal, performancewise.

My 9800GTX OC in SLi were really almost as fast as the CF setup I tested. The CF setup was a tiny bit faster. Not a lot. I think some reviews are really bad.

Edit; and who really cares? As long as your having fun.

I sure believe all the reviews 100% more than your very fast review that the
"HD 4870 series sucks" plus now I'm also getting my own experince with HD 4870.
To me your analysis are by faaaaaaaaaaaar much more useless.

The best indication that the ATI 4000 series don't suck is the NVIDIA very fast price reduction on the GTX 200 series. Your fav NVIDIA sure knows better than you and if the 4000 series actually sucked you would never see the reduction.

Are you NVIDIA fanboys ever happy?
I did read so many times before, the fanboys saying they wish ATI well so we can have more competition.

Now when ATi is competitive and starting to save some big money for the NVIDIA fanboys, they are even less happy.

Guys smile and be happy, if not give me a call and I make you happy.

Furthermore this tread is about "HD 4870 vs GTX 260" and all I see from the fanboys the GTX 280 posting, not even close in the same price range.

See here is what's funny, the HD 4870 isn't as fast as a GTX 280 but it is close if not faster in some test than a GTX 260. And if you look at some tests it actually can hold it's own with the GTX 280, not often but it can.

I'm not posting links to benchmarks because there is no need too. The GTX 280 is the fastest card, however at almost $200+ more dollars I don't really care and that's the point that a lot of review sites and customers are trying to say. In my opinion it's always been down to price to performance ratios and the HD 4000 series delivers hands down in so many ways it's hard to argue that it isn't a good buy. Being the fastest isn't all it's cracked up to be but hell being damn close to a part that cost $200 more is pretty damn awesome.

So while NVIDIA still remains the fastest, you're fooling your selves if you think that matters any more. Honestly it's a great time, if you're an NVIDIA fan spend the money you'll get a great card, if you're an ATI fan by an HD 4000 series card you won't be disappointed and if you're like me and you don't really care well hell it's great no matter. At this moment I can buy ATI and get a cheap damn good video card. However thanks to ATI NVIDIA is already dropping their prices. Still not good enough in my honest opinion but close.

So stop your fan boy whining and enjoy the great times, that's what I'm doing. Competition is great!
