Not at those resolution of course, because none of the cards could run those effectively. The GTX 280 should be the first choice for people with 30" + screens, I'm not denying that, but for lower resolutions with 8xAA the 4870 gets the job done quite nicely.

For me it came down to a couple things... Firstly, I was concerned at the lower 512 Meg Memory on the 4870 since I intend to play everything at 1920x1200 and I wasn't sure how long it would take for that to get tapped out (I heard there are 1gig 4870s, but I couldn't find one in my market).

Secondly, I have an SLI motherboard that I really haven't had the chance to put through its paces, and since I can't get two ATI cards on here, the obvious was to put to nVidia cards in... these will most likely be the last graphics cards on this board.

I do think the 4870 is a good card, and I seriously considered waiting until the 4870x2 showed up, but alas I'm not a very patient person

There aren't any 1Gb versions yet, and I really doubt we're going to see such cards in at least a couple of months. :-/

The GTX 260 is a solid performer and will give you a more solid gaming experience when SLIed compared to 4870 CF due to the more mature drivers.

I do think the 4870 is a good card, and I seriously considered waiting until the 4870x2 showed up, but alas I'm not a very patient person

I'm not either, and I'm dying to get a new card, but I know that my patience will be rewarded if I just wait a little bit longer...

I think it comes down to games people actually play. If lost planet, jericho, GRAW 2 and Gothic 3 are your type of games and you don't use 8xAA, then by all means go for the GTX 260. Those percentages are pretty much useless as they factor in a lot of games that don't scale at all with CF. Driver maturity is the only thing separating the two right now.

No idea, but I think ATi is doing their best to correct this issue(if possible).

Another thing I noticed is when the GTX 260 loses @ 1920x in GRID and Assassins Creed it's still putting up very playable FPS. The same can not be said for the HD 4870 when it loses @ the same res in Lost Planet-

There is no difference when 8xAA comes into play.

Another neat thing about the HD 4870 is currently you can cook your breakfast on it.

I'll put my bet on an overclocked GTX 260 winning vs an overclocked HD 4870 in the majority of games. Sure the HD 4870 has a few great wins, and folks seem to be focusing solely on those. Some benches are definitely contested depending on the site you believe.

We'll not know until someone compares an overclocked 4870 to an overclocked GTX 260, in which case I'd give the nod to the former(max overclocks on stock cooling@ 100%).

The bottom line is they are both good buys right now and you wouldn't go wrong having either card in your rig.

Its out of memory...card is not designed for those resolutions. Its targeted at the 95%+ of the population who don't have those giant 30 inch monitors..

I've owned plenty of AMD/ATI products and I may purchase a hd4000 series... However, I'm not going to pretend like they've had a great record the past few years. I will congratulate them when they show real leadership and maintain prolonged product advantage over their competitors at which time they will have earned the right to be more profitable then they have been of late.
p.s. The fastest single gpu sells for $499. Sounds like a bargain compared to Intel.

Heh, I never thought about it like that.

You could spend $1500 on a QX9775 CPU, $650 on a Skulltrail motherboard, $840 on 4Gb of Corsair Dominator DDR3 or $550 on a PCP&C 1200W PSU. The GTX 280 is the cheapest top of the line component you can buy at $499.
