WOW even Firefox resize performance is impressive. I'll post my xorg.conf and my startup script in a few hours but here's what I get when I try to start compiz-fusion:

Code:
vg@vg-desktop ~ $ compiz --replace
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: Flags: bus master, VGA palette snoop, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 64
01:00.0 0300: 10de:0611 (rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present.
Trying again with indirect rendering:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present.
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity

glxgears
Error: glXCreateContext failed

Odd. glxgears failed. Does this mean that somehow I'm actually not using the nvidia drivers and I'm using the vesa driver? Just out of nowhere...?

No way dude! Everything feels so much snappier! I can finally scroll without lag! I'll install it when the nvidia dudes fix the driver. Until then, I'll stick with... uh... what exactly am I using now? VESA drivers? What do you call them?

Anyway, as I said before, 2D is more important to most people than 3D. I don't game on Linux - yet. Nor do I use CAD/Blender - yet... So I have no use for 3D and I don't need compiz. I'd much rather be able to scroll/resize/use Eclipse without lag and have a responsive desktop like I finally have due to a weird error in my nvidia drivers.

You're using the nvidia driver without the GLX extension. You might as well use the nv driver if you don't care about 3D.

Ok, are there any guides on using that driver? Ex. how to set up xorg.con?

Yes, a lot. Check your distribution's wiki or forum.

Forget that xP I just replaced nvidia with nv because I saw that xf86-*-nv was installed. Now I can't install the old binary drivers, but I don't mind. My desktop is responsive enough for now. I wonder how KDE 4 performs...

So what was happening before? Was I just using the nvidia binary drivers without the glx extension? And why would that increase 2D performance?
