Motherboards equipped with SB750 chips are already fixing Phenoms clock problems, even if only for overclockers just now. When Shanghai/Deneb (45nm 6MB L3) hit they may just be able to remain competitive if they launch at 2.8GHz with a 10-20% IPC improvement.

Redeemed, cutting the cache on Phenom would not reduce power usage significantly. More so any power usage it would save would be far outweighed by the performance decrease. To stay competitive in the mainstream segment, AMD need a fast dual core processor. Because of the TLB errata and clock ramping issues, this wasn't possible with Agena based Phenoms.

AMD have been taught a few valuable lessons from 2007. I expect them to really catch up in 2009.

Don't forget the new AMD chipsets are excellent, especially for HTPC use. Also, the only real solid competition for the 780G chipset is the Geforce 8200... which has been available for AMD CPUs for months but has yet to be released for Intel CPUs.

So if anyone wants the fastest, cheapest and most flexible integrated setup, they're almost forced to go with an AMD CPU. Add to that the dirt cheap 45 watt Athlon X2s, and AMD should have a pretty firm hold on the HTPC and multimedia market, with a very solid standing in the rest of the mainstream market.

Because of that, I really doubt their financial problems have much to do with the actual performance and quality of their products in comparison to others.

If they are having terrible sales figures and their CPUs aren't being used in OEM systems, its a problem with marketing, sales and management... not so much the products themselves.

The success of the 4870 may help a little bit, but it'd probably have more to do with restoring their good name than actually giving them billions of dollars due to sales of $300 graphics cards.

I don't know what could get them out of the hole their in, or how they dug it so deep, but I think it'd take more than releasing a superior product to turn their company around.

AMDs 690G/780G and low cost CPUs appeal more dollar/performance to the average users then Intel.

I sure do hope they rebound strong. Ever since I switched to Intel my computer has been nothing but trouble. It's the AMD gods getting vengeance on me

You must be referring to the trouble with the ****ty designed Intel CPU coolers.

Funny you say something about that Even though I only water cool now, I did notice that the stock HSF that came with my old Xeon 3060 (C2D 2.4GHz) is larger than the one that came with my new Q9300. I found it extremely odd that the HSF for a dual core was larger than the one for the quad core. I understand that they are from different processes, but the quad runs way hotter than the dual core did.

Its not really local competition since AMD is a US-founded and US-based company.

Both MS and Intel are US-founded companies as well. More than likely they'll step-in.

its taking every bone in my body not to make that quote my new signature.

I wonder what Redeemed's excuse is going to be for AMD's net losses that are going to happen Q3 and Q4 of 2008. Meanwhile Intel will continue to send out new processors whenever they feel like it. Intel could quite honestly close production of all new processors, and just sell processors they have in stock from 2 years ago and they would STILL dominate the market.
