Unhappy 96.43.07 on Ubuntu 8.10 not working

Hello,

The new driver doesn't work for me. I had used "nvidia" driver 96.43.05 before installed 2.6.26 kernel and than changed the driver to "nv" in the xorg.conf. After installing the new 96.43.07 version I changed back to "nvidia".
Now I get the X server configuration error dialog which suggests to change the configuration, but selecting the "nvidia" driver doesn't work (i get 800x600 screen, cannot change it, Compiz doesn't work and so on).
I tried to left only the following section in the xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "NVIDIA Device"
    Driver "nvidia"
EndSection
Unfortunately, with the same results.

Please find my nvidia-bug-report.log attached.

The (EE) lines in the log are:
Code:
(EE) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1)
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "dri2" (module does not exist, 0)
Please help!!

Thanks!
-Mike

The mismatch and ABI errors sound like you have the wrong versions of extensions/libglx.so and drivers/nvidia_drv.so installed. It looks like you used nvidia-installer, but the preferred way on Debian and Ubuntu is to use their packages - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Bi...erHowto/Nvidia. I have a Ti 4200 at work and it's fine with Debian's nvidia-glx-legacy packages (96.43.05). The only xorg.conf I see in your bug report is xorg.conf.failsafe, which has an 800x600 mode and no Driver "nvidia" or Load "dri2" (not even sure what that module is). Can you paste the actual xorg.conf?

96.43.07 doesn't support the new xserver that comes with latest Ubuntu 8.10. I am also having the same problem and have been forced to use the nv driver for quite a while now...

Oh, thanks. Seems like we have to wait for the next version.

My xorg.conf was just the Device section shown before (i've read somewhere here, that cleaning the xorg.conf may help with the newest xserver.). The file in the log has been automatically generated and my clean xorg.conf was overwritten when the xserver had started.

So NVidia, any news? Ubuntu 8.10 is releasing in less than a week and the legacy drivers don't compile!

Can you please open up a beta version with the fixes so we can test this before Ibex goes gold!

While I can't promise that it'll be released before Ubuntu 8.10 comes out, we are working on it.

For more than 5 months now nvidia has been postponing the release of legacy drivers tailored to X 1.5, as shipped with fedora 9. Welcome on board my friend. The more time slips, the more distros are going to get hit by this.

Meanwhile Mr Nvidia comes here once a week on average refusing to give a date, but be assured "we're doing our best", and it's due "real soon now".

Yeah, right.

And it will be delivered at your doorstep by the toothfairy or father Xmas, they're not exactly sure whom they'll chose in the end, but they're having meetings to know which one is actually ISO certified.

i guess "mr nvidia" is only allowed to write code for about 1 hour a week for the legacy stuff... maybe he should tell his boss that there are a lot of frustrated linux users (and more and more people are switching to linux...) out there, who payed a lot of money (when the prices for gfx cards were really high)... yeah, and nvidia should better employ more linux coders and work closer together with the xorg-guys
or maybe we all should learn howto reverse-engineer drivers for the nouveau project =;P

Just wanted to chime in to say that I too would like 8.10 to work with my integrated Geforce4 MX.
