Default Serious performance problem with canvas tag on firefox

Hi,

Using Fedora 9 on AMD x86_64 and nvidia drivers. Nvidia 8600 GT.

On Firefox 3 and opera 9.5 , canvas tags are really slow (see http://blobsallad.se/ for a canvas example).

CPU is 99% used and X is very slow.

If I try with "nv" driver instead of "nvidia", everything is ok. Tried by 10 people on IRC irc.freenode.net #fedora-fr, every users using nvidia drivers has low performance problem.

Thanks

PS: When Nvidia will give specs to create opensource driver, my RT Kernel will works with it... and this kind of troubles could be corrected really quickly.

On that page in Firefox 3.0.1 with an 8800 GTX, 2.4GHz C2D, Ubuntu Hardy AMD64, 177.13 driver and InitialPixmapPlacement=2 I get:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
10697 jay 20 0 550m 127m 25m S 7 3.2 0:10.23 firefox
5717 root 20 0 736m 63m 14m S 4 1.6 6:45.56 Xorg
6190 jay 20 0 277m 47m 32m S 1 1.2 1:12.70 compiz.real

But there was an XULRunner update in Ubuntu today that made other pages super smooth, so it might have been fixed by that.

We had xulrunner update on fedora and bug isn't corrected. It seems that nvidia driver have a real problem.

Try to move the "blob" on the example page, and look your CPU usage while you move the blob...

Please, realize that the problem only appears with nvidia module

I forget to say that the problem appears with opera also, opera doesn't use xulrunner

(this is while moving all of them to the left)

lets me think that this is somewhat distro or layer 8 related.

both 20% on X and firefox 3 seems fine to me for that kind of content.

My CPU usage doesn't change by more than 1% while I'm dragging it. The blob moves completely smoothly, too.

You're confusing two issues. Firefox renders some things in inefficient ways which their developers are tackling in new releases. NVIDIA has not accelerated all of the rendering paths as well as other graphics card manufacturers have, but that doesn't mean that Firefox updates cannot improve performance as well. They have, I saw huge performance improvements with today's update.

I was asking if the update improves performance of this issue for you - as it has the potential to do - not letting NVIDIA's driver team off the hook. I can't reproduce what you're experiencing on my system, though.

Really, if I use "nv" driver problem disapears.

I really think that's not FireFox or Opera but really the nvidia kernel module. Fedora 9 is up to date and everything works well. The only trouble appears if I'm using NVIDIA module + canvas.

In fact, I see lot of troubles with this kernel module with graphic softwares. Inkscape, Cairo dock or Screenlets have serious troubles if i'm using nvidia kernel module.

Using "nv" or "nouveau" works great (but 3D isn't supported). I really wonder why you haven't such of problem. Maybe the kernel module used by Fedora is problematic.

Please stop reading what you want to believe I've written and read what I have written.

NVIDIA 2D performance sucks. We all know it, there's an enormous thread on it you can't possibly miss and there's been no real movement on the problem for months. I am not denying that your problem goes away with an Intel or AMD graphics card, or with a different driver.

I was just asking if you'd tried the newer XULRunner because it's the only source of performance improvement you might see for the rest of this year. If you're not interested in pragmatism and just want to inform NVIDIA that their driver has a problem then ignore my post and email linux-bugs@nvidia.com. That's the only channel they officially recognise for bug reports. (And by recognise, I mean that you're unlikely to receive a reply and will not be able to track progress on that bug. The whole user experience is like being in a giant casino in which you're not very likely to win.)

Before to tell me to read you posts correctly, read mine as well.

I said on the first post that my Fedora is up to date and I said on my second post that my Xulrunner is up to date. I said also that the problem appears on Opera wich don't use XULRunner. Problem appears on CANVAS tag on BOTH browsers and while ANIMATION.

I only asked here if someone has the same problem because we are 5 persons who see this trouble (lot of casino winner isn't it ?)

The same problem here with the newest drivers (BETA) and Arch Linux.

I don't seem to be affected by this. I can split about 15 or so and its still perfectly fluid. Gets a bit laggy with a large number, but these are quite expensive.

mozilla-firefox 3.0.1
xulrunner 1.9.0.1
x86 177.13 nvidia drivers
gentoo
8800GTS G92

On a side note, since updating xulrunner, slashdot and digg don't have any lag issues in firefox.
