Here are the relevant sections in my xorg.xonf

Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "Card0"
        Driver "nvidia"
        VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
        BoardName "GeForce 7600GT"
        BusID "PCI:2:0:0"
        Option "NvAGP" "1"
        Option "NoLogo" "true"
        Option "RenderAccel" "true"
        Option "AddARGBVisuals" "true"
        Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"
        Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
        Option "DynamicTwinView" "false"
EndSection

...

Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Enable"
        Option "RENDER" "Enable"
EndSection
It doesnt get better if i disable all options in the device section... And again: I am not running composite but just standard 2D with KWin...

Using nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2 also doesnt make a difference... I also tried it with =1 and =3, but no improvement... Also the glyphcache stuff doesnt make a difference too...

It looks like Dragoran's card is not affected. KDE4.1 is unusable for me with any nvidia driver (well, I didn't tried 100.14.xx series xd) with 'tricks' or without them and some GTK* apps are very slow - GF6800 too.

My GeForce 7600GS (PCI Express 16x + 512 MB VRAM) performs wonderfully with nVidia driver for Linux; you can look at Conky:

In this screenshot:

Kaffeine is executing a DVB-T channel.
Gecko-mediaplayer for Firefox3 is executing a stream from NASA.
VLC is executing a Windows Media Video (High Definition).

CPU load average is only 39% (CPU0 = 43%, CPU1 = 35%).

In my case, 2D and 3D performances under Linux are better than Windows!

That's definitely not what Aaron said...
We're planning to improve what needs to be improved for Geforce 6 and 7 series as well.

Not surprising... nobody here is complaining about video or kde3 (which even my 8600 handles easily)

I'm considering buying a computer with the 9800M GT, and I need to make a decision soon, so I would greatly appreciate any information.

Thanks.
Sorry for re-posting this, but I'm still looking for an answer - anyone know? AaronP? Plagman?

While this release is a small improvement over the previous one, it is a huge step back from the one before that. I think that it is consuming about an order of magnitude more main processor to do the same rendering that worked well in the 173.14.05 drivers. There are also lots of newly-introduced artifact issues that make most games unplayable. Just try and play an old game like UT99 (which used to work very well at 1280x1024 on my AMD 2500 nforce board with a 6600 card), and the performance degradation is very obvious.

These new optimizations are broken. You're driving me to the point where I cannot afford to buy an nvidia product ever again, because its Linux drivers are broken so much of the time.

Can we please get some emergency corrective development activity and perhaps add some switches to revert from these defective new optimizations, and get back to having a usable platform?

Thanks for clarification, and sorry for my rudeness. I was just a bit shocked when i read this... I am not a native english speaker, sorry again.

Well, i am looking forward for better drivers, as my current situation can only be described as "crawling"...

Well I don't have the hardware to test but cards with the same gpu arch are already running so it should work fine.
