Default nvidia support for upcoming Ubuntu 8.10 (X.Org 7.5)

AFAIK, Ubuntu 8.10 (due to October 2008) will come with X.Org 7.5. Does anyone know how soon will NVIDIA support this version of X.Org?

Thanks a lot.

yes and it works, but the legacy drivers still need to be updated.
btw you mean xserver-1.5 not xorg 7.5 (the release will be 7.4)

Also as far as I'm aware currently ubuntu has enabled xen in their standard kernels, which the nvidia driver does not like (there are patches floating around these forums though).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

In my Ubuntu 7.10 x86 installation, X.Org is used (thus the configuration file "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"), and not X Server. Has anything changed since 7.10 regarding the use of X.Org?

The xserver is part of X.orgs X11 implementation, and afair it is supported, as it is now considered stable (API / ABI) and already used in other distributions.

Regardless all the warnings, I went and upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 some days ago. I have somewhat old HP laptop with NV GPU onboard, which belongs to legacy 96xx drivers. As you all know, NVidia hasn't released 96xx driver built for X11R7.4 and so Ubuntu fell back to OSS nv driver.

That would otherwise be great, but the open driver does not:
1. support my dual screen configuration
2. give me direct rendering.

So now I'm forced to suffer with vesa. It's less than a week until Ubuntu release, and as far as I know, NVidia has neither released new driver nor given any information about releasing it, and now I fear that I'll have to stick with vesa or downgrade back to Hardy while NVidia does ... nothing. It's not like they wouldn't have enough time. It's just that they don't care. No offence, of course.

Anyway, I think I've suffered enough and next time I'll buy my PC with Intel or AMD GPU.

Yes, I this is what I thought, too. When they are not willing to support their products anymore, I will no longer buy NVIDIA products.

Btw, this beta driver is still not shown under "Drivers/Support" / "Beta/Archived Drivers".
