Default Re: what do you think of EA now?

My problem with EA is how they try to milk franchises. Battlefield being a prime example. They've also made some very sub-par games, especially for a company with their kind of cash (the last two Medal of Honor games being prime examples).

However, Crysis turned out to the be really good (if a little short and with a resource hog of a snow shader), and the Mass Effect port turned out to be good. And they've made some sensible comments about their future direction and piracy, so my opinion of EA is improving. The real proof, to me anyway, that EA has changed their tune will be Dragon Age. If it plays like true PC game in the spirit of Baldur's Gate (which is what Bioware has been claiming), I'll be very happy. If it plays like a console port, EA will be back on my s***list.

I've always liked EA

Over the years they've given us some great titles.

Although i didnt like the direction of the BF franchise, 1942 was great, desert combat from dice was the best, and even bf2 rocked, that's as far as it went for me.

Need for speed also went of the rails a bit.

Never really got into the sports titles apart from the golf.

More power to them imo

I think EA have improved massively in just the last year. Games across the board seem to be of better quality than their usual yearly re-releases. I've just played the new Tiger Woods Demo on the 360 and it is a truly big improvement on last years effort as well. The new FIFA looks great too, and is the first time in a good 6 years I've looked forward to playing a new FIFA.

I just want an updated BF2, one with an all new graphics engine at least as good as COD4's. A present day, modern conflict with woodland and desert. Sprinkle at least 2 air biased maps and maybe some maps that have a naval attack component. Use some of the concepts from BF2 Project reality. Bump player count to at least 48 per side, I used to love the 150 player matches in "Joint Operations".

Imo there is absolutely no risk for EA with an updated BF2 theme. It's a money maker, they took a bit of a leap with 2142 imo. And it didn't pay off like they hoped I'm sure.

edit:

In the past I have been VERY critical of EA. I do think they have improved and my opinion of them has improved. I don't really fully respect them yet. But, I have to give them credit for BF2 because I feel it's undoubtedly one of the best multiplayer games ever created.

Seems they´ve learned to let game developers they buy do their thing.
In the past they bought good devs (Origin, Bullfrog etc) and basicly forced their own corporate culture onto these companies, and interfered so much that it destroyed the developers.

DICE seems to have pretty free hands now for example, old EA would have them do nothing but BF2 expansions, but here they are, working on a quite different type of game (Mirrors edge).
Obvoiusly BF series stuff aswell, but they´d be doing that anyway.

So in that aspect they´ve prolly bettered themselves, which is really just comon business sense, not to destroy your investments (even if they still have all the IPs once the bought company is dissolved).
Dont really play any "EA made" games so I cant speak for those, do they make anything but "EA sports" games in house?

So far, I'm loving Madden '09. Last year's Madden was not that good, but they've improved it 100 fold.

Mirrords Edge and Dead Space are a nice offering... now let's see if EA keeps up new IPS or goes back to the ol' cow milking.

They seem to be heading in the right direction, if they´ll go with what they´re saying.

Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello has spoken out, claiming that the company that once published a Jurassic Park-branded fighting game and a James Bond racing effort is no longer "in the business of exploiting other people's licenses with bad quality games."

Time to chime in my opinion. EA is officially on my **** list again after playing Mercs 2. The game concept has a lot of potential but they fail to deliver in almost every way possible. I would have loved to hand over my money for a game that can be played with a bunch of friends where we could all drive around and blow stuff up. This isn't going to be the game. Hopefully Rockstar can show EA how to port a game over with GTA IV.
