The 9800 GT is unsupported at the moment but this card is quite new.

The ID I got with LSPCI for this card is : nVidia Corporation Device 0605 (rev a2)

Weird.. My Gainward 9800GT shows up as "nVidia Corporation Device 0614 (rev a2)"
lspci -n: 10de:0614 (rev a2)

Xserver-xorg(1:7.3+15) with nvidia-drivers(173.14.09) detects it as "NVIDIA GPU Unknown (Unknown)" but it does work anyway. PowerMizer, Overclock, Thermal Monitor and Antialiasing Settings all work. I'm not using Compiz or KDE4 so I can't say how the card perfoms there.

The only drawback is that auto-calibration of video settings in games wont work reliable since it's listed as "NVIDIA GPU Unknown", and wine wont be able to auto-detect the right amount of video memory.

I haven't tried any of the beta drivers since these(Debians 173.14.09-3) work pretty well for me.

It seems it does :-). I first tried the opensuse 11 click once installer and that didn't work. An hour ago I downloaded 177.68 from http://nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=118244

Opensuse 11 instructions:
* Alter the properties of the file so that it can be executed. Right click, properties, permission tab and set the execute checkbox.
* Go to: Computer > Yast > Software Management and add the packages: gcc, make, kernel-source
* Open a terminal, right click the desktop and select open in Terminal
* type su <enter> and enter your administrator password
* type "init 3" and your x session wil terminate
* type "./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-177.68-pkg1.run" <enter>
* Now follow the instructions of the installer. Accept the license and let it configure x and just wait for it to finish (here about 2 minutes total)
* type "init 5"

And now x should start again but with the nvidia drivers.

Not only is it not supported, but the fanspeed is stuck at 100% with no way to turn it down...

Only because lspci does not know about the pci id does not mean that the card is not supported.
