Oh, somehow I missed that Rage is a 2010 game. That's a long way off.

I wouldn't buy a BD drive now then. By the time the game is out the drives will be far better and far cheaper.

A quick look at Wiki shows a 20x dvd speed of around 27MBps and a 6x BD is about 27MBps. However, remember that DVD's are CLV and BD's are CAV. A dvd is only 20x on the very outer part of the disc, it could easily be under 10x (say around 13MBps) at the beginning of a DVD. BD discs on the other hand are a constant 27MBps if being read at 6x. The actual install time between the two could be fairly significant especially if you have to start swapping discs.
I got Descent: Freespace on DVD with an IBM P2 400 that came with a DVD drive back in the day.

Bman212121, also remember that DVD doesn't read at 20x, it burns at 20x

there are few drives that you can mod to read at 18x

and from experience 6x BD CAV, doesn't read at constand 6x

BD drives aren't that bad now. $300 for a burner these days.

I don't have a Blu Ray, not planning on getting one for probably a year. I don't think the number of blu ray PC owners would be very higher, less than 5%

doesn't matter how many have it. what matters that ID might give us a choice

you want the lower res DVD version, OK go for it

you want the better higher res collectors version BD, go for it

By the time the game comes out BD drives will probably be more of the norm.

Don't be ridiculous. HD-DVD takes away texture quality. I hooked up my 360 HD-DVD... Like that I was missing high res textures in Bloodlines...
