Default Is the Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT supported?

Hello,

I'm considering buying a HP Pavilion dv7-1080ez Entertainment Notebook PC (FM298EA) and I see it has a Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT video adapter. I'm wondering if it's supported on linux.

I can't find it on this list:

Can anyone help? Would you recommend against buying this notebook?

Also, will compiz work? Even on KDE 4.1?

I intend to use Linux...

Looks like it's on the list for the 173.14.12 driver in Linux.

See the Readme:

Yes, but be aware of this if you intend to use Compiz seriously.

Personally I would opt for an AMD card if I were buying a laptop right now, as there's no ETA on a fix for this problem and it's been ongoing for a long time.

Thanks for your advice!!

I'm aware of the Nvidia problems with KDE 4.1...

Well, my HP options are laptops with:

- Ati Mobility Radeon HD 3450 Graphics
- Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT
- Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
- Nvidia Quadro FX 570M
- Ati Mobility Radeon X1350

While Ati concquered my heart with the open specs, I heard the X1350 runs terribly on linux and has no compiz support. I don't know about the 3450 though...

What would you recommend?

The x1350 will run compiz with the fglrx drivers. It will even run compiz with the latest open source drivers (though few distributions outside of Fedora 9 currently package them).

I can't comment on the nvidia cards, and how well they will perform. It does seem to be hit or miss for many people. If all you are interested in is running compiz, and not gaming, the intel might be the best choice.

Thanks! I guess I'll go with the Intel chip then...
