Exclamation Study Finds Parents More Concerned About Video Games Than Alcohol and Porn

LOL! .. from what i've seen so far i believe its true though.
Quote:
According to parental guidance organization What They Play, recent polls conducted on 3,000 respondents in two separate polls concluded that drinking beer and watching pornography were less objectionable activities for children than playing certain video games.

Further, viewing violence was more acceptable than seeing content involving sex and sexuality within games.
.. Which shows the parents ignorance & lack of knowledge about video games these days.

So I guess most parents would prefer to watch their kids masturbating while watching porn than playing games?

Are you serious? Do you have a child? You gamers defend your games to the bitter end. If you want to play them fine but don't act as if they do not have a negative impact on young children. Parents should not be letting their children play these violent games and monitor how much time they allow their children to play any game. At the same time you guys who do not have children have zero idea what you are talking about. My son saw me play a minute or for TF2 and he had nightmares for a couple of days. These games are more violent than you know because you are used to them.

The study clearly says why they are more concerned about video games. It is because they feel more comfortable in dealing with the alcohol and porn issue than video games. You are mischaracterizing what the study is saying. Parents should be concerned about all these issues.

I dont have childern but i do know & confirm the video games effects on kids. heck i even talked so many times to my friend who has a 5yr old kid to be more careful about what his kid is playing.
my problem is with parents treating games more aggressively than alcohol & porn which is nothing but a lack of education & knowledge.

That wasn't what the study was saying. Below is the crux of the article. If anything parents should take more time to understand the games and what not. That is where the parents are failing.
Quote:
“Although these findings seem surprising at first, they hint at fears parents have about video games,” says Cheryl K. Olson, Sc.D., co-author of Grand Theft Childhood. “To some parents, video games are full of unknowable dangers. While researching for Grand Theft Childhood, parents we spoke with in focus groups often bemoaned the fact that they didn’t know how to use game controls - and felt unequipped to supervise or limit video game play. Of course, parents don’t want their children drinking alcohol, but that’s a more familiar risk.”
I don't think games are evil. All things should be in moderation. What really bugs me is the gaming community constantly defends the games with NO regards to what is really going on. Think about it. A bunch of 20 something guys thinking they know something about children. That idea blows my mind and makes me laugh for hours. Still it gets better. When I do post anything saying that games are actually not good for children, the gamers here completely lie about what I say and then act like little kids. I'm not saying you are but look at the post above mine. There was no attempt to understand what the article was saying or what I said. All he knows is someone opposed gaming so he has to be a idiot.

well some of us were kids and with very younger siblings at some point too I've turned out fine and so have my siblings... The only thing that I could understand about this is a younger child around the ages of 7. At an age when porn and drugs really aren't available or a problem(I hope). Hard to believe parents are worried about porn. I would have ran around the house humping objects when i was 15 if it wasn't for it

I'm used to it. My position is very moderate on gaming. Just make sure you monitor the games your your child plays and limit their playing time. Very common sense stuff. Yet if you say that games are more harmful than what gamers believe, then gamers get very hostile and treat you as a Nazi coming to put people in ovens.

You are simply not allowed to question anything in the gaming community.
