Nvidia demonstrates ray tracing on the GPU
Aug 14, 2008 18:22 - Nvidia says to have demonstrated the first GPU only ray trace at Siggraph 2008. The tech demo shows a sports car, which, according to Nvidia, contains up to two million polygons. The rendering performance is said to scale linear. The resolution is said to be 1,920 x 1,080. The demo shows ray tracing shadows, reflections and refractions as well as an anti-aliased image. The application is running on a Quadro Plex 2100 D4 with four GPUs. http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,6...ng_on_the_GPU/ edit: images scaled from 2560-1600 to 1920-1200 ![]() ![]()

Accurate reflections and shadows are good, but I have yet to see anything Ray Traced that looked impressive...
This is the closest I've seen, but it still doesn't look like much. Razor sharp shadows just look unnatural. And there must be some pretty serious limitations with texturing becuase it always looks like ass. I'd love to see ray tracing take off, but its going to take a hell of a lot more than pinpoint accurate reflections and shadows to make ray traced games look better than standard games. I'd just like to see ONE screenshot of a ray traced game or engine that actually looks better than a non-ray traced game. Even if its running at 1fps, I want to see it done... because at this point it looks like ray tracing is good at some things and incapable of doing other things.

I think only the shadows/reflections/refractions on the car and buildings are ray traced. The textures are normal rasterisation.

I guess I worded my last post poorly... What I'm doubting is the ability for Ray Tracing "engines" to properly work with all of the high resolution visual effects we already have in real time.
Renders like the one you showed are obviously a lot different than real time rendering, since there is no limit to what can be shown in a picture when you're spending hours rendering a single frame in a proprietary environment like 3d Studio or Maya (rather than OpenGL or Direct3D). It just seems odd that with all of the amazing advances in hardware and ray tracing technology over the years, real time ray tracing demos generally look like ass outside of the reflections...
