Default Blank Screen on Startup 9800GX2 AMD64

Ok, just finished building a shiney new AMD64 PC running 64 bit Ubuntu 8.04

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3
Processor: AMD Phenom X4-64
Ram: 4GB
GFX: EVGA 9800 GX2

Did all the usual stuff to remove ubuntu's nvidia drivers, downloaded the latest stable driver from Nvidia (173), installed, rebooted.... ...and got the black screen that's mentioned in a few other threads
tried to make sense of some of the suggestions there, none of which seemed to work so tried the beta version (177) with the same result.

ran it verbose and logged the output, can anyone give me any suggestions on a workaround or a fix?

Edit-- Many thanks to Milivoj for the solution, flashing the Mobo bios to the latest version cured the problem.
