Hi all,
I posted an article, and realized I probably should have posted it here, as it is Linux-specific. Instead of reproducing it, here's a link to the original (it has attachments, too): http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=118217 The bottom line is that my new 9800 GX2, working fine under Windows, is having trouble under Slackware 12.1, resulting in what seems to be a machine crash at X startup (black screen, no response to any keystrokes, network inoperable, etc...). There is an error in Xorg.0.log (INVALID MEM ALLOCATION), but its followed immediately by a "Corrected" message, and the rest of the log seems OK. I've tried all the suggestions in the README and "Common Problems" to no avail. The nvidia module compiles fine and seems to load OK, and I've tried both the 173.14.05 and 173.14.12 drivers, same issue regardless. Can anyone help ? |

Yes, I have the same problem. It is, because the driver don't support this card at the moment.
Use the standard graphics driver for frame buffer devices, that works at all distributions at the moment for this graphics card. That's no crash, xfree want's to load the driver and the driver gives up, so there is no screen xfree can connect to. |

That's a slight thread necro, but the 9800 GX2 is supported in 177.70 according to its readme.

Sure, I can read and this card should be supported, but the driver(173.14.12 and beta)
says: ----- (--) PCI: (3:0:0) nVidia Corporation unknown chipset (0x0604) rev 162, Mem @ 0xfa000000/24, 0xc0000000/28, 0xf8000000/25, I/O @ 0xbf00/7 (--) PCI:*(4:0:0) nVidia Corporation unknown chipset (0x0604) rev 162, Mem @ 0xf6000000/24, 0xb0000000/28, 0xf4000000/25, I/O @ 0xaf00/7 ----- And also on every distribution is then used the standard frame buffer driver after nv gives up. I have the Leadtek PX9800GX2 and the GA-MA790FX-DQ6 motherboard. |

It's normal for newer cards to be listed as unknown. Here's a GTX 280 that works fine:
(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) nVidia Corporation unknown chipset (0x05e1) rev 161, Mem @ 0xfd000000/24, 0xd0000000/28, 0xfa000000/25, I/O @ 0xbc00/7 Then later: (II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU GeForce GTX 280 (GT200) at PCI:1:0:0 (GPU-0) Attach a bug report to your post. |

Yes I reported this as a bug yet.
Mine also works very fine, but not with the new donloaded and installed nvidia driver but with the frame buffer driver that is loaded after the nvidia driver gives up. |
