Default Complete lockup 177.68

My problems are when running compiz fusion, flash, and wine. Example to reproduce. I turn on utorrent through wine, goto youtube and watch a video in full screen. I get complete screen lock ups within a few minutes. Can't do anything without a hard reboot. If I just run wine and compiz fusion I will lock up a randomly from a few mins to an hour or more. If I turn off compiz fusion I have no problems. I've attached my bug report.

when did this problem start? was the system always able to take this kind of load up until some point or is this a new hardware or software configuration? have you read the sticky regarding troubleshooting stability issues?

Yes, I have used the performance sticky, doesn't make a difference. Also this is not huge load and I've ran like this before with no issues. This problem came up between the 173.xx and 177.xx drivers.

The performance sticky is a bit different than the stability one.

Thank memeyou for that sticky, I hadn't noticed it before. Can you explain to me why setting maxcpus=1 for kernel parameters fixes my stability issue? I have a dual core amd processor. I also understand that when I set that option I am using one core now. Which defeats alot of purposes. Seems this is a known issue scine January of this year. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...24/+bug/151382

honestly i couldn't say, having only a single core cpu and not being an ubuntu user. does idle=poll work in it's place?

Nope that does nothing. It only works if I have maxcpus=1 . A combination of the two doesn't matter as I still end up using one core. Example ide=poll plus maxcpus will work but I'm still using one core. If I just add ide=poll I still get the lock ups.

Try adding
Quote:
options nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222"
to /etc/modprobe.conf and reboot

NOTE: this will disable powermizer thought

Edit: saw your bug report file ... you are not using a mobile gpu so it might not change anything...

Thanks Dragoran. That didn't work though, I've spent all day trying to make this work. If anyone else has any idea what's going on I would appreciate all the help I can get.

this might seem silly:

remove if you have them the following kernel module parameters:

NVreg_DeviceFileUID

NVreg_DeviceFileGID

NVreg_DeviceFileMode

Doesn't work either. I've done some tests and I believe it is the kernel from Ubuntu
Code:
Linux linux 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Aug 20 17:53:40 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I've tried their alpha of the next Ubuntu with kernel 2.6.26-5 and that gets rid of crashing but causes problems with the actual flash. I wish I knew how to update my kernel in Ubuntu myself otherwise I am going to have to wait till they update the kernel to this version. I reinstalled the stable version of Ubuntu as the alpha has just too many functionality issues for me. Thanks everyone that has helped. If anyone else has any other ideas I would love to hear them.

Just thought I'd thank everyone once again for the help. I've went back to windows after a year of frustration with Ubuntu/linux. Good luck to everyone and open source.
