Someone with non-8xxx series? Maybe it is something on 7xxx and lower...

8800 GT and now is indeed fast, with previous drivers scrolling was choppy.

Maybe 8xxx optimizations broke 7xxx ???

Firefox 2 didn't have that scrolling issue, Firefox 3 did.

This gives me significant scrolling perfomance - super smooth.
I don't know why is problem with fixed bgs.

Here with my athlon xp 2400+ and 6800gt things are really sloooooooooow with fixed backgrounds

You have an nvidia 6800 ( series 6 ).
I would use nvidia-96xx drivers ( if they work well ).
New drivers are for gpu 8xxx and 9xxx.

I'm a gnome developer, I'm testing features and eye-candy we will see in gnome 3.0 (features that require xrender and alpha channel).
96xx are much more bugged (much more), unfortunately
