Default 173.14.12-177.68 openoffice kde4 plasma problem

Hi,

I have a Nvidia G72M (Go 7300) in my notebook (Dual Core 2300, standard Centrino stuff) which has problems with openoffice running in KDE4 environment.

Thing is, whenever I run anything from the OO.o suit, my plasma starts to go bonkers. Weird artifacts start to appear, parts of the panels and my superkaramba applets start to change colours or just disappear. It appears that the problem exists only when the OO.o window has focus, everything returns to normal after

Now, this happens in both the stable driver (173.14.12) and the beta one (177.68). I have tested numerous configurations:
1. stable driver with clear xorg.conf (no params set). The problem appeared with (tried all OpenGL settings) and _without_ desktop effects (composing)
2. beta driver with clear xorg.conf and with the params suggested here (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=118088). Again with and without composing the problems occurred.

A lot of nvidia/kde4 users are affected by this. More cases can be found here: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=157017
I was hoping that the problem will be fixed in beta drivers. Is there any hope that it might?

I think I just got this problem too, but I didn't start Open Office, just KDE 4.1 starts, the wired aritfacts appear very often, but after you do some other operations, eg, move window, open applicationi, it disappears, but after a while, it appears again.

My display card is a 7600GT with AGP interface.

I just tried it with the new 177.70 beta driver. The problem still appears regardless of desktop composing being on or off.

Is there any solution to this problem?

Yeah, I've got that damn problem too and the problem is inside the BINARY nvidia driver. Why NVIDIA doesn't release a free open source version of the drivers? The quality of the binary modules is always crummy. I think it's time to pass to Intel or Via.

The bug has been there for quite a while now and has been reported in many places:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...77/+bug/253844
http://forums.opensuse.org/applicati...lfunction.html

I was really hoping that the beta drivers will fix the issue, but they haven't Could someone from nvidia please comment on this subject? When, if at all, can we expect a fix for the problem?

hm, I think my problem could be related to this one:

i'm running compositing (compiz-fusion + emerald) with awn (avant-window-navigator) on and 7600 GT (PCIe),

and everytime I run openoffice (oowriter) the launcher-icons on awn

1) either almost completely disappear

2) look like their negatives

3) something other

in earlier driver-versions 173* there were major problems with display of the window-decoration (emerald) which seem to be fixed now (either by the community / emerald-devs) or nvidia

afaik this also happens with my Geforce 8400m GS

The saddest thing is that this happens with and _without_ composing. If it was just a matter of turning the fancy effects off, it would be a non-issue for me. For me openoffice is unusable now. Eclipse (thanks to disabling the blinking cursor in GTK2) is a little better.

I'm using kernel 2.6.27, nvidia 177.80 (on GeForce Go 7300), KDE 4.1.2 and Openoffice 3.0 and the problem is still on.

I've bought a 24" display lately and with it's 1920x1200 resolution the problem is even more noticeable. With openoffice the whole desktop is now going berserk (not only the plasma widgets or the panel) at this resolution.

Could _anyone_ from nvidia please state what's the progress on this issue? Are you working on it? Do you need any additional test cases, bug reports, anything? I don't ask for an immediate fix, but at least a small comment that something's being done.

I mean, this problem remains unresolved for 4 months now and makes KDE 4 on nvidia hardware unusable not only for me, but for many other users. Just google around and you'll see the scale of the problem: http://www.google.com/search?&q=nvidia+openoffice+kde

Thanks to all for bringing this to our attention. We reproduced the issue and filed internal bug number 470239 for the team to investigate further.
