Default low resolution on second screen

Driver version is 173.14.12 on Linux-x86, running on ubuntu 8.04. When I plug an external monitor like a projector, run nvidia-settings and use the /Detect Displays/ button, the new screen is detected but I cannot set its resolution higher than 640x480.
Tried this on different projectors with always the same result, regardless the Twin view or separate X screen option. Tried the same projectors with Windows, higher resolutions are available. I guess something might be wrong with my xorg.conf file, so I attach it in case.
This is really an everyday pain in my everyday job, so any insight is warmly welcomed.
Cheers.
