I don't know how to describe this problem, but you can get the problem from the attached snapshot, I run kde 4.1.1 with NV 177.70 driver on a nvidia 7600GT AGP card.

I've used the 177.70 driver for some time now and these are some considerations:

-performances are generally good, kde 4 with compositing is now usable for me. But,

-i noticed that performances does not remain stable; for example the animation for reducing/restoring a window is sometimes smooth and sometimes slow/laggy.It seems that performances are better when a new session starts and get worse after some time.

- the same goes for other operations like moving windows around, resizing them etc. They are good most of the time but not always.

Hope these stability issues will be fixed with the future releases.

edit: open suse 11 with KDE 4.1 here, nvidia 8600GT with driver 177.70

yeah, a lot of other users noticed this too that the performance gets worse over time (including me),

in most of the time it seems to be that the nvidia-drivers or xorg-server / parts of the X-server are the memory hog,

I don't know if it's the same problem but when starting X it consumes around 70-100 MB, after several hours (~ 12 hours) it's already at 180 MB !

so this can be either an unnoticed memory hole/BUG in X or the nvidia-driver, but it could also be the compositing-manager (compiz, kwin, ...) which tend to loose memory

compiz(-fusion) in general is somewhat more laggy than with ati-/amd-hardware from my experience (mobility radeon 9700 vs. geforce 8400M GS) !

so this might be the culprit but this has already been the case for at least one year and more ...

if you don't say otherwise and mention kde4 people assume kwin, I guess

this seems to be an general problem with compositing (and nvidia drivers) to get slower over time ...
