Default Ubuntu e-Geforce 8400 GS

I have purchased a EVGA e-Geforce 8400 GS card I was hoping to use in my Ubuntu machine. I assumed the Nvidia drivers would work for this card, however I downloaded the latest drivers from the Nvidia site and after installing driver with out error I rebooted my computer.
Once the driver gets loaded (Right before the login screen) my monitor goes into self test mode as if there was no video card signal being sent.
I have tried the beta drivers as well with the same result. Any suggestions on what I might do to fix this or would you recommend a different video card all together? Please let me know if you need any other information.
