I didn't even want to play Doom2 for long... it's ok in a little window.

Do these Steam versions work with source ports like Doom Legacy or JDoom? I still play the Doom games once in a while using Doom Legacy. I can run the game in OpenGL at 1600x1200 with 3D sound, high color dynamic lighting, anti-aliasing...

It actually makes it look pretty decent for being 15 years old.

They should work as long as the .wad files are available and aren't packed in some strange format.

EDIT: Doom Legacy: http://legacy.newdoom.com/

I think this one is just for the Doom series but ZDoom works with all of the games that use that engine (Heretic, Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, Hexen and Strife which is a non-id software fps\rpg). Haven't tried it myself though.

Yes, just go to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\doom 2\base\ and copy wad file to Doom Legacy folder. I love Strife, and been wanting to play it. It's so underrated.

Is anyone else having the issue of Doom 3 running very poorly regardless of settings?

I remember my old retail copy of this ran fine on my 7900gs.

System specs:
Core 2 Duo E4500 @ 3ghz
8gb ram
Geforce 9600gt 512mb
X-Fi Xtreme Music
XP Pro 64bit
Forceware 175.16

I'd imagine this is sufficient to run the game well.

You have too much ram. The game doesn't like that.

Hmm, I installed ZDoom and it automatically finds Doom 1, 2, Hexen or whatever without copying wad files to ZDoom's dir.

How do I add stuff to the command lines on a steam game? A Quake expansion requires command lines to change the res.

With Source and HL engine games its in properties for each game (right click in the steam menu). I'm not sure about non Valve games though.

Ok, so it says "launch options"... so I just put in the -command?

edit: can't get it to work.

To be honest, I'd just use a source port with Quake too. Like Dark Places. It has lots of nice features to make the game look and feel more up to date.

Tenebrae is a good one too though I don't think its supported too well anymore. It adds Per-pixel lighting and normal mapping, similar to the tech that made Doom 3 look the way it did. Other than graphics effects I don't think it adds much to the game, where as DarkPlaces adds stuff like better net code and an in-game server browser.

EDIT: Actually in some screen shots it looks like DarkPlaces has per pixel lighting too. So I'd just use that. The game will look awesome and work more like a newer game.

Tenebrae 2.0 - http://tenebrae2.com/
Tenebrae 3.0 is supposed to be in development but haven't heard of it for long time.

Edit: It appears Tenebrae 2.0 isn't quite finished... last update on that was 2004.
