Problems with installing Drivers on SuSE 8.2

Hi!
I wanted to install the Nvidia 4363 drivers on SuSE 8.2. The installer said, that it could not find the kernel header files. so i installed so kernel-source. Then the installer built a kernel, but could not load it, because it does not match the linux-kernel. i think, that is, because i have the athlon.kernel installed, but the source for the default. here is some information about my system:

Athlon XP 1800+
GeForce2 MX 400 AGP
SuSE Linux 8.2
Kernel 2.4.20-4GB-athlon

I'm not sure how you got into that situation. There should have never been any compilation since the nvidia 4363 installer contains precompiled modules for *EVERY* SuSE 8.2 kernel (and other major distros too).

When I tried it (Asus A7N8X and nVidia TNT2 M64) the installer simply placed the correct module into my /lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB-athlon tree.

I suggest you uninstall the driver (NVIDIA..4363.run --uninstall) and try once more.

the installer said, that there is no precompiled kernel for my linux-kernel, then it tried to download it, but there was no one on the nvidia-ftp-site, too. and i tried it many times

The kernel source supplied by suse is for the standard kernel, not the athlon one.

You need to make a small change before building the kernel module.

Edit the file

/usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h

and amend the first line so that it reads

#define UTS_RELEASE "2.4.20-4GB-athlon"
