Default GTX 280 GPU and Shader clock linked or unlinked

I bought an EVGA Superclocked GTX280 GTX. It's a great card, but I can't overclock the card past it's default factory shader clock speed of 1350MHz. If I unlink the clock speeds, I can get the core to run at 675MHz. Is there any benefit between linked and unlinked overclocking? All benchmarks I've tried show a 675MHz GPU and 1350MHz shader performing better. I'm just not sure about the advantages of a linked shader and GPU clock... if there are any.

core clock won't change performance that much, shader clocks affects performance much more.

That probably depends on the situation.

Shader clock will obviously matter more for shader intensive situations, where the core clock will matter more for fill rate heavy situations (high resolutions, large textures, AA, AF...).

My EVGA is not much of an overclocker when the fan is set to default speeds, 40% idle and 42% underload, I can get it to run at 700/1500MHz speeds but need the fan at 100% to provent it from artifacting which seems to happen at a temp of +65C anything under this does not artifact. I throught it would be able to take higher temps then this.

I was wondering how high a GTX280 will overclock,I had mine up to 732/1604/2600 and it ran fine and I did'nt get any artifacts in FurMark,But I got scared.I don't want to fry my new card.it comes clocked at 665/1458/2400
