Default 3D performance issues

In these days are hot KDE4.x nvidia performance issues. But here are other nvidia linux performance problems.

From time when new series of drivers arrived (i dont remmember concrete drivers number , but it may be something with number 100.x an upper) arrived, games in linux dont run smooth. Before i haved GeForce 6800 and games runned fine, after installing drivers from new series moving isnt smooth, is laggy and choppy. I tried to recompile kernel most times, tried 64bit and 32bit apps, different distros and nothing changed. This problem can be solved only with installing legacy drivers, but ... legacy drivers work only with older cards and after upgrade to 8800GT and newer there isnt solution...

Critical problems:

Problem is global, i seen it on all machines with nvidia linux binary drivers from new series installed

laggy and choppy when playing games(visible in newer games like Quake4, Doom3, Enemy Territory Quake Wars ...)

low 3D performance(games run much slower than in Windows, at example Enemy Territory Quake Wars)

very low 3D performance(i am not sure if is for this responsive nvidia or concrete app. At example Unreal Tournament 2004 in most time run at 70FPS (it is very low for this configuration, but playable ), but most times it fall down under 45 FPS on machine descripted lower)

Configuration:
CPU: Core2Quad Q6600
RAM: 4GB Adata DDr2 Extreme 800+
MB: Gigabyte EX38-DS4
VGA: GeForce 8800GT 512MB
Sound: SB X-Fi
HDD: 4x Samsung HD322HJ in RAID10

I just got a gforce 8600 GS, and while the fps are better than on my integrated card (6100), most 3D, including a simple glxgears, are quite choppy and not smooth at all.

just increase antialising

I had a similar problem with my 8600GT. When FPS became to high, games were really choppy.

Thanks, that helped me to fix lag/stutter in most games ... but it isnt solution. There is a place for enhancing driver performance.

it seems a little better with antialiasing, but on my wife's computer (same GPU card, MS windows), games like Wow, even without antialiasing, run very very smoothly.

It really looks like a problem with the driver. On the integrated 6100 card, glxgears is smooth too.

Even with basic desktop usage (compiz, xcompmgr), it looks slow and not much responsive.
