They need the AC97 codec to serve as a ADC/DAC (Analog to Digital/Digital to Analog converter). Even the crappy Audigy/Audigy2 has AC97 codecs on it. The APU on the MCP-T is the sound DSP, all audio functions are performed on the APU, no the AC97 codec.

So don't worry about the AC97 codec, almost all modern soundcards including the PCI bus hogging Creative ones have them on the card itself.

Unfortunately I'm not too sure about the CMedia 8738, since it's a Host Signal Processing chip, which is kinda bad since it requires the CPU to do all the work instead of the APU. It's rather stupid of Chaintech to use the 8738 instead of the much better APU. Asus previously did the same thing on their lower end NForce mobo.

As long as your audio config screens look like the ones here, you can be confident that you're powered by good APU sound DSP instead of anything else.

Thank you very much for the information. This is especially pertinent to my case as I also have the Z-560 set. So now the choice is which board to get; the Chaintech and Epox both look good. I have a Philips chipset currently and heard the NV1 about a month ago and detected a fullness of sound that was richer than my card could produce, since then the NV2 has become my "sound board" of choice.

i thought this was interesting, as i missed it yesterday

From Anandtech:
Quote:
Oh how things have changed; currently the nForce2 SPP with the regular MCP costs a total of $2 more than VIA's KT400. Looking back at our latest review of the nForce2 chipset, for significantly higher performance a $2 increase in manufacturing cost isn't bad at all. To the end user this means that nForce2 motherboards could theoretically be priced within $5 - 8 of their KT400 counterparts.
not bad at all

Weird how Pricewatch/resellers are starting to list the Asus board when Asus itself doesn't even have the product listed on its own web site.

I want one I want to build a 'thin' client (literally). While there are other ways to do this, an integrated video nForce2 board seems like the cleanest/most-bang-for-buck method.
