Cool K7N420 Bios & Drivers

Hi Feanor,

You wish is granted, in case you are not aware of it yet the following links have that which you need plus additional notes that may be of interest.

Bios update for the K7N420 version 2.7 is very good and works well with nVidia's latest drivers, find it at: K7N420 Bios ver. 2.7 from MSIComputer.com

As far as drivers go nVidia just released WHQL USD located at: nForce 2.03 WHQL drivers from nvidia.com .

If you happen to be running the integrated video you can also utilize the latest GeForce WHQL driver found here: Detonator 42.30 WHQL at MyDrivers.com.

Something also not commonly known is that the nForce AGP chipset shares much of it's abilities across the PCI bus making the nForce platform the best multi-monitor platform we've yet tested.

In this regard it is always best to run nVidia everything if you do this. We have tested Dual Head MSI GF4 TI4200 and GF2 MX 400 PCI card for 3 displays, all worked very well.

Enjoy...

"I do hope newer nForce drivers come out soon though. My nForce1 chipset could use some driver updates. "

Hmm... not sure what's up with the Nforce 2 chipset, but from this article Nvidia Nforce 2 may have serious problems.

Of course, its from the Inquirer so...

Suspicious behaviour on the boards

By Arron Rouse: Thursday 27 February 2003, 10:56

NVIDIA'S NEW NFORCE 2 CHIPSET was eagerly awaited and gratefully received but PC enthusiasts around the world are finding problems. It seems that some motherboards based on the chipset are causing far more headaches than they should.
The best example is the Shuttle SN41G2 barebones system. The tiny machine features an Nforce 2 motherboard in a neat looking case. It seems the BIOS shipped with the combo can stop the system even POSTing if you change certain settings. The only way to get the machine going again is to open up the machine, clear the CMOS and boot with the Insert key held down.

Then there's the case of the Asus A7N8X Deluxe which seems to suffer from a combination of BIOS and battery problems. And the Epox 8RDA+ has been showing up problems too. Even Abit seems to be getting more than the usual share of issues cropping up.

This could be a sign of problems with the chipset. It could be just individual manufacturers having problems with early production motherboards. Either way, you might want to take a good read of the various hardware forums before buying a board.

We will keep our eyes on the situation. More news on the problems as and when the information becomes available to us.

Default nForce 2 questions

My new Leadtek K7NCR18D-pro will be here this week and scanning some info, I find something that says 2 pieces of memory are required. Is this for 128 bit DDR? I assume that 1 stick of DDR-2700 will run at 166 mHz and 2 would run at 333 mHz? Can someone elaborate on this. Also, if there are Linux users running nForce2 based boards, what kernel works best?
Thanks

2 sticks of memory are required for dual channel operation. don't worry about it unless you have integrated graphics on the motherboard.

i don't think your motherboard is one of those

This is a BIOS setting? Is there an "agressive" setting or you you mean ramp up the multiplier?
