Default Geforce fx5200.....I need help!

I am new to Ubuntu Linux Hardy Herion, and I just purchased a PCI GeForce FX5200 Nvidia graphics card. I had a AGP GeForce 32meg Nvidia graphics card installed, but I removed the old card and installed the new PCI Geforce FX5200. I was a windows (xp) user for many years up until about a month ago, so I am VERY new linux user. In other words, I am clueless about what I am doing in Ubuntu. I un-enabled the nvidia drivers from the hardware folder prior to installing the new card. I then removed the old card and installed the new card and then enabled the Nvidia drivers from the hardware folder. This did not work. Help, what do I need to do next to make the new card work? A popup says that I need to x configure file and to run the nvidia x config as root then restart the x server. I have no idea what it is talking about? Help!................

It probably wants to tell you that you need to run the program nvidia-xconfig.
That means the driver was installed and you only need to configure it.
So type: nvidia-xconfig
(in a shell window while logged in as root)
When you cannot login as root, try: sudo nvidia-xconfig

I sudoed what was suggested and this is what was displayed?

dan@toast:~$ sudo nvidia-xconfig

Using X configuration file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".
Backed up file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'

What do I do now?

Then you should alt+ctrl+backspace (This restarts your X Server to apply the new Xorg config, you do that too in case something goes wrong for example x gets frozen).

I have not picked out a driver yet. From what I've read there are several ones to choose from? I just read the post about removing all the old Nvidia drivers and stuff, I had an older Nvidia card so I removed all the old drivers. Now when I sudo nvidia-xonfig this is what I get

sudo: nvidia-xconfig: command not found
dan@toast:~$

Now when I boot Ubuntu Hardy Herion, I get a low graphics screen and it attempts to load a driver. It works for VGA but nothing else. I am up for any and all suggestions for which driver I should use and which one is the best. I really appreciate your all your help! Thanks!

I did most of these the other day that were posted by Arron on 5/28/08. Listed on the posts at the beginning of this forum under "sticky".

Info posted by Aaron:
Debian GNU/Linux or [K]Ubuntu with Xorg 7.x

If you wish to install the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver on a Debian GNU/Linux or Ubuntu system that ships with Xorg 7.x, please ensure that your system meets the following requirements:

* development tools like make and gcc are installed
* the linux-headers package matching the installed Linux kernel is installed
* the pkg-config and xserver-xorg-dev packages are installed
* the nvidia-glx package has been uninstalled with the --purge option and the files /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx and /etc/init.d/nvidia-kernel do not exist

If you use Ubuntu, please also ensure that the linux-restricted-modules or linux-restricted-modules-common packages have been uninstalled. Alternatively, you can edit the /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules or /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common configuration file and disable the NVIDIA linux-restricted kernel modules (nvidia, nvidia_legacy) via:

DISABLED_MODULES="nv nvidia_new"

Additionally, delete the following file if it exists:

/lib/linux-restricted-modules/.nvidia_new_installed

Please note: unfortunately, it has become difficult to keep track of the pre-/post-installation steps required for [K]Ubuntu, and the above instructions may be incomplete. If in doubt, it is recommended that you use your distributor's NVIDIA Linux graphics driver packages, exclusively.

************************************************** ************************************************** *****************

The only thing I have left to do is to look for and delete this file.....

/lib/linux-restricted-modules/.nvidia_new_installed

So I think I have eveything "clean" for the new driver.....................
