Default *nix nublet needing help with installing driver

Currently running openSUSE/KDE4
have an nVidia7950 / 256M
My problem was I more or less followed the steps from:
http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-...r-HOWTO.html#1
and I somehow totally lost my 'desktop' and I could only boot
to console, leaving me clueless of what to do next, since I lost
KDE4, my GUI and was left with a SHELL that I have 1/2 a
clue of how to use.

I just started learning Linux about a week and a half ago,
experimenting with it on my window's OS Virtual Machine.

Anyways.. I just need someone to help me out with what
I need to do in order to install this on the above mentioned
OS, openSUSE/KDE4, so I don't FUBAR my system again
and have to spend another 5 hours of formatting and
reinstalling all over again.

Lack of any instructions of how to exit X ... I cannot figure this one out.

Hello, I haven't used SuSE for a long time, so I might a bit rusty.

To stop the X server, IIRC, type this:
Code:
sudo stopx
Or, simply go to runlevel 3:
Code:
sudo init 3
Install the NVidia driver, and go to runlevel 5 to start the X:
Code:
sudo init 5

Hi,

Try sudo /etc/init.d/xdm stop
After installing the drivers, start it back with:
sudo /etc/init.d/xdm start

run nvidia-settings as root, go to X Server Display Configuration, Detect Displays, configure them, Save to Xorg Configuration File, exit nvidia-settings, enjoy.

i have no idea how to do what you said, didn't make any sense at all to me, but i did get my dual display set up and working.
leo@linux-5296:~> sudo nvidia-settings
root's password:

ERROR: The control display is undefined; please run `nvidia-settings --help` for usage information.

Now my current problem is that I cannot run in 32 bit colours, and an application i need to run required 32 bit colours. I know the card can run 32 bit colours, it was doing it in Windows XP on this card, but I seem to be limited to only having up to 24bit
