Default 177.76 2D slower than 177.70 2D

2D is slower for me with the latest driver (with all performance tweaks):

177.76:

GtkEntry - time: 0.11
GtkComboBox - time: 8.42
GtkComboBoxEntry - time: 7.16
GtkSpinButton - time: 1.06

GtkToggleButton - time: 4.68
GtkCheckButton - time: 3.48
GtkRadioButton - time: 3.83
GtkTextView - Add text - time: 23.79
GtkTextView - Scroll - time: 3.35
GtkDrawingArea - Lines - time: 8.03
GtkDrawingArea - Circles - time: 9.19
GtkDrawingArea - Text - time: 2.14
GtkDrawingArea - Pixbufs - time: 0.45

Total time: 76.39
177.70:

GtkEntry - time: 0.11

GtkComboBoxEntry - time: 6.16
GtkSpinButton - time: 1.01

GtkToggleButton - time: 4.11
GtkCheckButton - time: 3.04
GtkRadioButton - time: 3.27
GtkTextView - Add text - time: 23.68
GtkTextView - Scroll - time: 3.80
GtkDrawingArea - Lines - time: 1.11
GtkDrawingArea - Circles - time: 1.46
GtkDrawingArea - Text - time: 2.14
GtkDrawingArea - Pixbufs - time: 0.45

Total time: 58.69
It seems the lines and circles are much much slower, along with ComboBox and ComboBoxEntry being a little bit slower (1 second each). Can anyone confirm this?

It's a shame because there are some other important fixes in the newest driver.

Thanks for reporting this. I identified the problem and it should be fixed in a future driver release.

Question Re: 177.76 2D slower than 177.70 2D

Hi Aaron,

Does the problem You identified also explain 3d (OpenGL) slowdown ?
I mean:

If you believe that your results are bad than please take a look here:

Code:
gtkperf -c 1000
GtkPerf 0.40 - Starting testing: Mon Sep 22 10:35:02 2008

GtkEntry - time: 9.40
GtkComboBox - time: 226.06
GtkComboBoxEntry - time: 205.38
GtkSpinButton - time: 50.87
GtkProgressBar - time: 50.66
GtkToggleButton - time: 122.05
GtkCheckButton - time: 87.40
GtkRadioButton - time: 99.67
GtkTextView - Add text - time: 47.03
GtkTextView - Scroll - time: 26.13
GtkDrawingArea - Lines - time: 84.64
GtkDrawingArea - Circles - time: 108.35
GtkDrawingArea - Text - time: 59.52
GtkDrawingArea - Pixbufs - time: 6.62
 ---
Total time: 1183.79
That's very optimistic version - I didn't touch my laptop during the tests.
When I try to use it for normal work (using ONLY 4 programs - Firefox 3.0.1, Evolution, Terminal and Avant-Window-Navigator) the results looks like:

Code:
GtkPerf 0.40 - Starting testing: Mon Sep 22 10:54:56 2008

GtkEntry - time: 86.45
GtkComboBox - time: 894.62
GtkComboBoxEntry - ^C
At this point I canceled the test, because I wanted to shot myself in the head for spending $20k for 10 laptops with nVidia graphic card.

And wait - that's with all optimisations recommended by nVidia.

All I expect from graphic card is to work and provide with basic graphics mainly for text (terminal, email, web). I didn't realise I expect too much from nVidia business focus product range - Quadro.

relevant informations:
Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Device 042d (rev a1)
NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 177.76
kernel 2.6.26
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7500 @ 2.20GHz
MemTotal: 2053532 kB

system was compiled using: gcc version 4.3.1
CFLAGS="-march=core2 -O2 -pipe"

nvidia-settings -q InitialPixmapPlacement
Attribute 'InitialPixmapPlacement' (rob:0.0): 2.

nvidia-settings -q GlyphCache
Attribute 'GlyphCache' (rob:0.0): 1.

nvidia-settings -q GPUCurrentClockFreqs
Attribute 'GPUCurrentClockFreqs' (rob:0.0): 169,100.
As you can see from the last setting wonderful "feature" powermizer decreases clocks to minimum level what makes system completely unusable (writing this one post took me 20 min...).

Keep up great job nVidia. One day you will write an usable driver for Linux. I'm afraid everyone will use Intel Larrabee by that time.

The only thing wrong I've got is the graphic card driver.

laptop spec - already provided
Xorg versions - 7.4
driver version - already provided
distro - irrelevant
kernel - already provided

The driver works good for first 3-5sec before powermizer kicks in.

using very simple glxgears you can see

(performance level - clocks 400:400)
13219 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2643.807 FPS

after around 5 sec it declocks card to (275:200)
2447 frames in 5.0 seconds = 489.371 FPS

to finally hit 169:100 after ~10 sec
196 frames in 5.0 seconds = 39.108 FPS

and it stays on the lowest level no matter what.
Apparently this wonderful "feature" can not be turn off.

I have to run a dodgy script in the background to force powermizer off:

Code:
#! /bin/bash
while true; do

    powerstate=`cat /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/AC/state | awk '{print $2}'`

    if [ $powerstate = "on-line" ]; then
       nvidia-settings -q all > /dev/null
    fi
    sleep 25;
done
Nabbed from the Ubuntu forums.

I've tried all of that and it doesn't work.

What's so hard in implementing "turn me off" button?

Perhaps you can enable coolbits and overclock it to the normal speed?

Yeah, it's really annoying not have a decent control panel. Whats even more annoying is how this graphics card needs to be run at full blast just to scroll some text! My 33Mhz Quadra 650 could scroll better than this...
