Default Non identical cards without SLI?

It's said that you need a pair of identical cards to use SLI. I'm not sure that it true anymore but I have an old mobo so I guess it's required for me. My question is do the cards need to be identical if I don't use SLI. Can I buy a new PCI-e 16 card, disable sli, pop it in and get a dual head system?

I have an Asus A8N-SLI Premium mobo with a GeForce 6600 LE PCI-e 16 card in one of the slots and nothing in the other. Is it possible to buy something like a Gigabyte GeForce 8500GT 512MB (GV-NX85T512HP) and put it in the other slot?

Yeah you can mix (almost) any cards in a non SLI setup.
