Default [bug-report] 9800GTX random hard freezes with 177.76

Hi,

I do have random system freezes with nvidia driver 177.76 (testing from 169.xx up to now).

The freezes have become more seldom with newer nvidia drivers, but still not completely eliminated.

It is 1-2 times in a week with 10 hours of daily work. So not very often. The situations differ from freeze to freeze, so I can not exactly describe the problem. I just can say: While scrolling in firefox or maybe rotating the compiz cube or using a neg-pluginin, suddenly the mouse is not movable anymore. Sometimes my USB-keyboard leds and the optical mouse is turning off, but today it just froze.

The same bug occurs under Windows Vista. And:

A friend of mine does have nearly exactly the same machine, but he has a nvidia G200 based graphics board. He only uses windows Vista and does have the same problems.

What do I want to tell you? I am really sure, it is not a hardware bug. I do not know, if the closed source part of the nvidia driver does maybe have some of the same code base as the windows driver, so maybe the bug is inside this part.

I read about reporting bugs. Even I do not have a multi GPU card, I already have tested disabling MMCONFIG, but this did not help.

Because this is a beta driver and no drivers yet have run without trouble, I hope you can find the current problem and fix it before releasing the stable driver. :-)

Default Re: [bug-report] 9800GTX random hard freezes with 177.76

I have installed the most recent stable nvidia driver. Same problem. Today even 3 crashes. This really sucks.

Well, I am not sure, if this is really a nv driver bug. So I do not mean this personally. I would like to find the source of this problem.

As a first starting point, I disabled cpu stepping. Could this be a problem? Please, _any_ idea help on how to drag down the problem is really, really welcome.

Some more details about my hardware setup:

* Motherboard is an ASUS P5E64WS Pro
It has a FSB of 1.600 and the memory is 4GB of OCZ memory. 2 modules - Livetime warranty. Chekced with memtest86.

power management:

The linux kernel is the most recent rc9 one.

No overclocking. A very good cooling. Have a look here:

http://www.roessner-net.com/?p=41

Page is german, but I want to focus the pictures of my PC.

I do not know, how to get more information about the main reason for the random freezes, because the machine is really freezing hard. No kernel dump nor anything else is written elsewhere.

Do you have any idea on how to activate more debugging. Or what I could test.

Thanks in advance

Christian
