Lol at this thread. 3 votes for XPx64, 28 for Vista x64.

XPx64 may have great driver support now, but before Vista came out, it was crap. Actually scratch that, it was worse than crap. It straight up sucked. I tried it once out of curiosity and within 2 hours had formatted and reinstalled XP 32bit.

It's not just 4-5 for me. It's more like 10-20. Night and day. I know I'm missing out on Dx10, but really. In Crysis does it actually matter?

Post Re: How many of you still favor Windows XP Pro x64 over Windows Vista Ultimate x64?

In my rig, i have Vista x64 (& XP32), but, i have a powerful enough rig to run it.

But, i remember installing XP64 on a laptop with 4GB of ram, for a professional photographer, cause Vista was eating 1GB of ram on boot, and XP-64 only 300MB. He was a heavy user of Photoshop, and he needed all the resources of the machine to work better. I had huge problems to find all the drivers, but finally, everything worked like a charm. Also he preferred the old 98ish style of XP (old user).

It's all about your target & needs.

Yes thats probably true dude, Crysis was a bad example for me to give tbh. In most other games that we play today that were released with Vista in mind there really can't be that much difference, not enough to stick with the older OS. With that said, i havent tried XP with SP3. I have stuck with Vista since its release and never looked back.

All I wanted was to see Direct X 10 ported to Windows XP Pro x64 but that will never happen.

Vista Ultimate x64 here also.

Decent hardware though. My daughter is asking about Vista on her Dell latitude and I recommended against it. XP still has it's place, or Ubuntu.

Yeah ,WTF?

The only thing I can think of that does that is changing between AHCI/IDE Emulated modes, Not OC'ing or anything else that's not new hardware related.

I never used WinXP Pro 64bit, but I did (and will again someday) use Vista Ultimate 64. So that is what I voted.

BIOS overclocking is hardware related - to Vista at least. And although XP has a similar activation system, Vista's is much more strict. Many other people have had this problem (just search the net). Frankly I don't feel like wasting activations as I work towards a stable overclock. Until DX10/11 becomes a requirement in games, or someone makes an app that I "have to use" that requires more then 3GB's of memory there's absolutely no reason for me to use it.

I do have Windows x64 but again, I don't need over 2TB's of storage on my main system, nor do I need 3GB's+ atm. And yes this is coming from the guy who was running 8GB's on Vista, unfortunately with the activation BS, I have since revised my needs vs. whether I really want to talk with someone from India for 2 hours to figure out what the hell they are saying. :P

Yeah I get that, but why does it happen to some people and not to others? I've overclocked and de-overclocked my system lots of times using various mobos and never had a problem. I'd never even heard that problem until you mentioned it. OTOH I'd heard stories like crainger's lots of times. If MS said that the re-activate due to an OC counted towrds the total allowed I would totally flip-out at them!

never had mine triggered by OC either.

sata drivers an trigger it as well, especially when you change from generic MS drivers to something like intel, ati or nvidia drivers.
