Default nvidia/ubuntu mess

I have three problems and one question:

nvidia 7900gto on amd64 opteron175 ubuntu dapper x86_64 kernal-2.6. Unable to use drivers without black screen.

nvidia 7900gto on amd64 2x opteron175 ubuntu heron x86_64 kernal-2.6 Don't know which driver to install. The 69. legacy driver and 173. driver do not work on my system. I get frequent lockups and black screen at x. I can only access my desktop by safe boot and reconfiguring x.

nvidia 8400M GS on an hp notebook intel x2 64 ubuntu heron x86_64 kernal-2.6. Scared half to death to install any drivers for fear of hammering my system as per above but I am not get full resolution on my screen as it is set up now.

How do I clean up this mess? I've got drivers installed that don't work. I can only get into my dapper and heron by not using nvidia drivers through "fix x...". Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Bug report generation and Ubuntu installation are both very well documented in the sticky threads of this forum.

Please read them.
