Update:

Driver first start (after reboot) init time: 3 seconds
Driver second start (x restart e.t.c.) init time: 30 seconds - that's why GDM do not allow to restart X.

As allready mentioned (with attached bug report) here:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=118250

I am able to reproduce this and I'd be glad to see a solution.

Please also attach to your post a bug report or any kind of log / output that might be interesting for nvidia developers.

Kind regards

Fuchs

Unfortunately the problem persists with 177.80, new bug report attached. Maybe the funny ACPI errors are related to this issue. Another interesting effect is that changing the display brightness reacts slow after a X restart.

Thanks in advance for investigating, nvidia devs.

Kind regards

Fuchs

PS: I'd also like to point out that the "bug" mentioned in the thread linked above, with urxvt and transparent background, is still not fixed (no acceleration for this).

nvidia devs, where you able to reproduce this?

I don't like bumping threads, but as said multiple times, I really appreciate feedback, so I know at least that things got noticed.

Kind regards

Fuchs

This is the same behaviour I encounter. No matter which distro, xorg etc. (tried Debian (testing), ArchLinux, Fedora8, Fedora9). This behavior ir observed with 17x.xxx drivers.

Seems to me that mostly thinkpad users are affected.

As I don't have my thinkpad at hand, and think this is ACPI related:

could you guys try unloading the thinkpad acpi module, and / or change settigns related to it?

Nvidia: please investigate, as this is a new issue with 177.* drivers it is probably related to your driver, which we can't debug on our own.

Sorry, but for me it works just fine.

Ubuntu 8.04, Lenovo Thinkpad T61, NVS 140M

(and it has also worked for ALL 177.x)

eckmann, are You talking about long delay on X restart?
If not just try this, start up, log in, log out and now You should get long delay about 30 secs after that gdm appears and is running fine. Or just hit ctrl+alt+backspace when X is running, should be the same.

For me it's not a big issue coz really I start and log in once, per week or so, as suspend is not affected, I don't consider this as a serious bug. Hibernate is slow as hell anyway and beepeing couple of times before resume (30 secs in between the beep or so), it takes couple of minutes to resume, I use hibernate only when my battery is almost empty...

The problem is that after 30 second delay GDM is restarting X again (cause of timeout). Is it possible to disable GDM timeout at least for a moment ?
