Athlon 64x2 4800+ vs Athlon 64 FX60 For Games

Hey Guys

I was just wondering, which cpu i should upgrade to...i'm not planning on upgrading board/cpu yet, just want to upgrade from my 3000+ to the maximum cpu my board can take (GA-K8N51GMF-9-RH)

I can get either

Athlon 64x2 4800+(E6,Toledo,90nm,1MBx2)

or

Athlon 64 FX60(E6,Toledo,90nm,2MB)

Its only for Gaming...

4800+ all the way, that was my last chip before upgrade below, ran all games superbly, also ran the FX55 for a while, preffered the dual core 4800+ everytime.

no no no. The FX60 is a dual core and the fastest and last chip they released for socket 939. If they are the same price go for the FX60 by all means!!!

The 4800+ X2 is 2 x 1MB cache running at 2.4Ghz. The FX 60 is 2 x 1MB cache running at 2.6Ghz. The FX-60 has an unlocked multiplier so it might help you OC a little easier however, from my experience the FX-60 is almost topped out so I could only get it up to 2.8ghz. The 4800+ X2 might be able to hit 2.8Ghz as well, so it's really a toss up.

You can also look at an Opteron 180 (same as 4800+ x2) or an Opteron 185 (Same as FX-60 but locked multiplier)

Any of those processors will make a big difference, it's mainly up to price and availability. IMO the difference between any of them is going to be minimal.

I could get to my desktop and run most benches at 3.1Ghz with my FX-60... but 3.0Ghz was the max stable OC. Board was an ASUS A8N32 SLi Dlx, 4GB DDR500 RAM, dual 640MB 8800GTSs, and Vista Ultimate x64. Was a super fast system, chewed through everything I threw at it. Almost wish I didn't sell it. It was ultra stable, and ultra fast.

My vote should be obvious.
