Default Founders Club Rip Off ?

So last year I purchased an annual membership to the Founders Club and was certain
I selected that I would NOT like my subscription to be automatically renewed.

A few weeks ago I find my credit card has been charged with another annual fee
from the Founders Club...

I contact them... wait a week.. they get back to me saying they can't refund the
money.

I e-mail them back very upset explaining that I never once allowed them to put
new charges on my card, and they claim "well we sent you a confirmation e-mail
2 weeks before to the registered e-mail address". (the one addy i rarely check)..but

Why would they send me a confirmation e-mail if I never opted to have my subscription
renewed????????? And then just charge my card anyway.

I'm pissed, anyway I e-mailed them back and told them I'm not going to let
this go until someone helps me.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice or experiences like this that could shed
some light.

Thanks.

Like most automatic renewal services you have to cancel before your term is up otherwise you will be billed. Did you get a cancellation notice in your email when you selected the "option"? If so, that's all you'd need to prove your case.

Same crap happened here. I was missing the money from my credit card and had to make bank inquiries to find out that the mofos charged without letting you know. They didn't even send an email confirming the renewal...

I got screwed by them too. They are supposed to send you reminders but they do not require your confirmation. I never got one and they charged me a $60 renewal fee 2 weeks before my subscription ran out. They said they sent me a notice so they either lie about it or it is worded in a way that spam filters catch it.

Its a very shady system IMO. I've had several magazine subscriptions and none of them automatically take money from my account without my consent.

I'm willing to bet that the whole thing is intentional in order to get multiple subscription fees out of people who really only wanted one year.

Two weeks? According to the ToS they should only do it 5 days before... You could probably get out of that one.

Heh, I just remembered that I did actually "beat their system" the first time.

When I got my first subscription a couple years ago it came with several "free" magazine subscriptions. When browsing the user agreement, I noticed a few lines that said you didn't HAVE to take the subscriptions. If you turned them down, they were worth $10-$20 each! I told them I wanted no magazine subscriptions and I pestered them with a few emails. A few months later I received a $40 check in the mail. My first year of IGN Founder's Club only cost me $20.

I should have just canceled it right then though to prevent future charges. I don't mind paying for a good download service but its obvious that they are more interested in dishonest business, so they can go screw themselves.

It may have been less than two weeks, I can't remember. I fought it like crazy but they wouldn't budge. There isn't much you can do.

Nice, I did the same thing with blockbuster. They gave me $25 to sign up and I only paid $16 for the service...

I am starting to think there are some advantages for losing your debit card every quarter or so!!!

Well as long as you consumed more in hourly wages for their employees time, then you should feel mildly vindicated.

I renew for 2 yrs everytime my subcription is about to expire... I don't mind the service, I like getting all the HD Resolution videos from IGN and no wait times on downloads from fileplanet...

I am still with fileplanet, I got a good deal once and left it going. Only now they cancel the hitpoints completely and the last few times I tried to download from any server I got atrocious speeds, moving to a free download place pretty much maxed out my connection. Now that is sad. I suspect I'll be canceling soon.

I cancelled mine few months ago. It's a bit more expensive and I rather use money on something better.

Well I've been persistent and also probably a real pain in the a**, but it looks like I 'might'
be getting somewhere. They e-mailed asking for our home # which is linked to
our credit card so perhaps they're starting to take this seriously.

I also mentioned in my last e-mail that I started this tread, and a few other people
have stated the same thing happened to them. lol.. Putting the fire under their
butts a little... it's so ridiculous how they can get away with this, as I was doing
some recapitulation and I don't ever recall receiving an e-mail saying they were
going to renew my subscription.

I'll post back with happenings.
