Default CRT-0 and CRT-1 swapped

I have an a GeForce 6200 card and a GeForce 8400 GS, both of which have one dvi and one vga port.

When connecting two lcds (one of them with an adaptor) both as CRTs to the cards, the 6200 identifies the VGA port as CRT-0 and the dvi port as CRT-1, but the 8400 sets the monitor in dvi port to CRT-0 and the one in vga to CRT-1.

Option "MetaModes" "CRT-0:1024x768+0+0 , CRT-1:1024x768 +1024+0"

Using twinview metamodes settings like the that I can orient them however I like, but the problem is that if I replace a 6200 card with a 8400 card the screens are swapped, regardless of what's in the xorg.conf.

I'd like to get away with one xorg.conf for both cards and without swapping cables, but that appears to be too much to ask for, is it?

So is this something that has indeed changed card hardwiring and there's no "compatibility" setting to ensure that with one xorg.conf I could get them assigned similarily?

Or is this something that could vary between manufacturers?

I currently use the 177.80 drivers.

I'm afraid that it depends on how the ports are wired on the card and it varies by manufacturer.

So it would seem. I have seemingly identical (from SW point of view) 8400 GS cards from MSI and Club3D and they indeed differ in that behaviour.

Now, is there a way to identify that behaviour (SW-wise) ?

Is the manufacturer perhaps identifiable somehow?

I'm not able to tell the MSI and Club3D apart without a look at the HW. And I wouldn't want to blacklist some cards because of this almost-a-non-issue.
