Default Quadcore or Faster RAM?

i want to upgrade my computer at the end of this year, but i dont know what i want to do yet. i am going to either upgrade to a fast (hopefully 12MB cache) Quad core chip, or i am going to go the cheap route and upgrade my RAM so i can OC my processor to 4GHz.

so, which do you guys think would be a more practical upgrade?

You won't see much of an increase going from 3,6Ghz to 4,0Ghz(and it's not even a given that you'll even reach those speeds even with faster ram).

So I'd definitely go for the quad core if you have to choose between the two! (Not that you need it anyway, as a 3,6 Ghz C2D8400 is plenty fast enough for today's games.)

If you don't have a reason to upgrade besides wanting to, don't. You're not going to get a major performance boost either way.

That being said, I'd probably go with the quad.

im not expecting a 20% performance boost or anything

i usually do a minor upgrade every year or so and a major upgrade every 2-3 years. prices have fallen through the floor on both of these items, so i was wondering which one people liked more.

If it's for gaming why not use the money for a gpu upgrade.

If that's not an option for you then I'd choose the quad.

You dont need memory or CPU, I agree with above...that 8800GT is a huge bottleneck. I've never used DDR2 800 that didnt do ~900 mhz. OCZ stuff ocs well. Push the CPU up more, I'm sure the ram can take a bit more. Sure you cant run 9 x 450? that would give you 4ghz.

Price vs performance HD 4850 Crossfire for about 300usd-

If price doesn't matter grab an X2. IMO your ram and CPU are fine. If you prefer single GPU the below HD 4870 1Gb for 270usd after rebate would be good. Currently it's OOS and should be back-

If you want to stick with nVidia get a GTX 260 and OC it or a GTX 280 and do the same.

Another vote for a video card. That is definitely the bottleneck of your system right now.

Unless you have other plans to upgrade that soon, I'd go for a GTX260.

Otherwise, the quad core is your best bet. A Q9550 would be my choice, though the multiplier is lower so you'd lose a couple hundred Mhz unless you're feeling brave enough to overclock your memory (which I don't recommend).

Lol! It was me! Can't let the other options stay all alone.

Seriously now, it won't be a huge upgrade with either of these, so I am with them fellas on the GPU upgrade. A much better choice.
