weird problem with fuzzy TTYs
hi, i just got a new comptuer with Athlon 2400+ XP, 512 MB DDR333 RAM, GeForce4 MX440 64MB, installed WinXP and Mandrake 9.1/KDE3. I downloaded the 4363 driver and installed it, no problems whatsoever. X runs fine, OpenGL runs fine, I can play TuxRacer no problem.
The problem, however, is this: after installing the driver, my TTY screens have become all fuzzy. If i do ctrl+alt+F1 through to ctrl+alt+F6, all the screens are SERIOUSLY fuzzy, I can barely make out what it says. its not just that they're blurred, they're shaking quite badly. If i boot linux in runlevel 3, this doesnt happen. it only start happening after I run startx and the nvidia logo screen shows up. i've attached XFree86.0.log. anybody got any ideas? thanks, kats |

more problems
now i'm also having another problem, i'm not sure if its related or not, but at random times, for no reason whatsoever, the computer just freezes. the caps and scroll lock indicators flash, and that's about it. no keyboard combination responds, the only way to get out is to reboot/power off.

nope
nope, didn't help.. the fuzzy TTYs are still there. the latest logfile is attached.
could this possibly be a hardware issue? i'm just wondering because my winXP also seems to be a bit unstable.. ocassionally (not very often) it just reboots the computer while i'm in the middle of doing something, although nothing that's very graphics-intensive. doesn't give me any error messages either, just reboots it for no apparent reason. |

well d00d, i am kinda stumped now, but again i don't know where your getting at with this fuzziness..could it maybe just be your monitors dieing, or am i getting the wrong idea..
and i also noticed in the log file, that it sets mode 1024x768 then it sets 640x480, and then it finally sets 1024x768...seems kinda weird to me... maybe you have screwed up in your xf86config-4 file..them modelines and all that stuff at the end of your logs look fishy....i may be out in left field...so maybe someone else could add some info on what they think |

thanks for the help anyway. i'm attaching my xf86config-4 file, if that might helps (i had to rename it with a .log extension to upload it). i talked to some friends, who suggested it might be framebuffer issues, that Mandrake isn't using VGA to show the TTYs or something along those lines, i'm going to try a few things they suggested and see how they work out

I can verify this problem too
Mainboard: ASUS A7V8X-X (via kt400) MSI GeForce4 MX440 4363 drivers kernel 2.4.20 It appears that the nvidia drivers (not the X ones though) fail to restore the TTY's when leaving, setting the frequency to 165.5Hz (!!) This makes it quite unbearable. |

is there any way to manually change the frequency? or an option in the X config file that we could use? i tried some stuff with framebuffers, changing it to 24-bit from 32, but it didn't work out

no fix I know of
No, theres no fix I know of except enabling a vesa framebuffer and then doing a force-reset each time you quit X.... (not tested but should work)
What has to be done is in the driver, to make it clean up properly after itself. |

if i maximize the window (1024x768 screen size)...
1257 frames in 5.0 seconds = 251.400 FPS 1258 frames in 5.0 seconds = 251.600 FPS 1257 frames in 5.0 seconds = 251.400 FPS 1255 frames in 5.0 seconds = 251.000 FPS |
